best bridge 'bucker for cleans

Re: best bridge 'bucker for cleans

Jazz, 59, PG+, PG, or APH would all do well. It just depends on the voicing you want.

I have a basswood hardtail that the '59 works very well in. Paired it with a JazzN and it's a clean monster.

The Jazz Bridge is surprisingly good in strats, paired with vintage singles. It sounds great for cleans, but also does heavy tones nicely. Don't worry about it being brighter than some other pickups, because it has a beautful voice and you can back off the tone to dial it in perfectly. I think it's even Seymour's first choice for an HSS strat, although Fender went with Pearly Gates for most of their HSS strats.

My other choice would be a 59B. It's also got a nice voice in a strat, and is very versatile.

When you go hotter than those, the volume gap between the humbucker and singles widens.

Howdy,

SD Jazz or DiMarzio Eric Johnson HBer. The EJ is patterned after an old Gretsch HBer: low output and articulate.

Re: best bridge 'bucker for cleans

my favorite is a low 9k bucker (PAF wind) with degaussed A2, or a VHPAF/Custom hybrid w/ degaussed A5, depending on the singles in your strat. The VHPAF/Custom mixes better w/ A5 singles (in my case, surfers), and the hot PAF w/ A2 works better w/ A2 singles (still great with A5's though, just not split IMO) The hybrid is more compressed, or at least sounds so because it's hotter. If your amp has good headroom, you should be fine though.

I never got why Fender chose an A5 PG for their Strats. Why?

Re: best bridge 'bucker for cleans

Fender chose the Pearly Gates + (Alnico 5) because they felt that it was a better match with their alnico 5 single coils...

Seymour has suggested a Jazz neck in the bridge of a strat in the past...he says it's a great match for the singles in most cases...

A use a little Screamin' Demon for doing this stuff.

Re: best bridge 'bucker for cleans

which one is the most transparent and would match nice with two single coils on an ash hardtail?

Jazz bridge. Never owned one, but going by what the Jazz sounds in the neck (two guitars so far I've owned that have a Jazz neck), it should sound so @#$% beautiful in the bridge. Some people have ranted before on how beautiful and crystal clear it is in the bridge, but I've forgotten where their posts are.

I'm a single coil fan, and it's the #1 neck I prefer because it's more reactive and dynamic, closest to a single coil in a neck humbucker I've ever tried.
