Best budget LP with real maple cap?

I have a 59n and a 59/C hybrid that need a good home inside of a budget Les Paul with a real maple cap. I originally had my sights on an Agile AL-3000M but they’re going for $600 from Rondo Music these days. What’s my least expensive choice here?

Re: Best budget LP with real maple cap?

Buy used, they often go for around half price. You can get a $500 or $600 guitar used for around $300 to $350, in nice condition, which is a lot more guitar for the money than a new $300 guitar.

I like Epi LP Stds and Customs a lot. Agiles are good too, but they use cheap 'mystery box' toggle switches that need to be replaced.

I also buy American-made PU's used, which really improves the tone of an import.

I've got some very nice imports that I have $300 or $400 invested in, that would have cost $700+ to get it all new. All you have to do is look.

LTD EC/Eclipse series includes set neck models with a maple cap of decent thickness (not just veneer over an arched mahogany back.) From about the -400 model upwards, American pickups are stock.

With American pickups fitted, the PRS SE Singlecut is great.

Epi LP Standard or Classic. The Ultra is also an excellent choice. Will definitely need to put some Duncans in it though.

Re: Best budget LP with real maple cap?

I'd say Agile, if you put the right pickups in it. Otherwise, it totally sucks. They do NOT respond to the stock pickups or vintage output pAF's.Anyone who thinks they do has **** for brains ..IMHO.
With the right pickups it plays very well and sounds great.

Re: Best budget LP with real maple cap?

^ Yes. They are essentially tone dead, horribly bright and make any stock output PAF sound thin, and weak, and brittle.
Whatrs the first thing someone wants to do to an Agile?; put PAF's in it! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...
YA gotta almost literaly put a certain pickup in it to compensate.
I did, and I've got the magic formula to make that Cheap heavey Agile made with B-grade wood sound great, but only under prodigious gain, cause you aint gonna get one of those guitar to sound very good clean.
Again; IMHO.
The upside is, if you set it up right, it can play really really well.
I mean, Its got jumbo frets and thats a huge bonus if you play a certain way, and ya cannot get that from Gibson.
Dont misundrastand me, it can't and won't play as well my Les paul Standard Gibson, but it will facilitate a certian play-style with those jumbo frets; the plability is great and I enjoy it.

Look up Dean Soltero or DBZ Bolero, the right one can be a gem for the price. Look for the mid to high end ones (without the exta frills like abalone that only jacks up the price), those are usually made in Korea, and more consistent with good quality. I believe they can be had for $300 - $400 new or slightly used.

Low end ones are Chinese.

Jerry, you're a fool...

how many of those have you played?!

I mean you are making a blanket statement based on my guess is 2, maybe 3 guitars out of thousands.

FWIW, forum brother and smokin player TwilightOdyssey uses an Agile with a set of PAF clones in it and his sound is far from thin or lifeless.

Well, Ive had two, and they are all the same.
And I dont belive what you said, cause I'm very familiar with those, and I know what I know, but knock yourself out..there is NO way on earth PAF clones sound good in those bodies...I'm sorry..been there, done that..but I suppose I'm not entitled to my personal opinion.

You are entitled to opinions all you want but you've stated several facts here based on your experience with 2 guitars out of several thousand...thats just dumb plain and simply.

Like I said TO uses an Agile, with PAF clones in it and sounds fantastic...don't believe me just check his clips, there are loads of examples here on this forum.

Maybe the issue you had was not in the gear but in the buffoon attempting to use the gear...just a thought.

Re: Best budget LP with real maple cap?

Look up Raven West Guitars on ebay. I have one and it's fantastic as far as the woods/tone /build quality is concerned. Between $150-300 pricewise.

.

Okay well..we'll have to agree to disagree.Theres no difference in any of those guitars. Thats a good thing really, they are built to a good standard. They sound like hell with PAF's .
I don't know who the hell TO is, but i can garuntee, despite what he may or may not sound like recorded , there is no way on Gods Green Earth a Agile sounds okay with low ouput PAF's ...Period.
In fact..I pulled my hair out trying to get that gawdamned guitar to sound decent, and there is on literally ONE pickup that will do it. Don't like it?;write you effin' Congressman.

You don't know nuthin'.

I'm sure there are some that would agree with you, but that doesn't necessarily make it true.

TO is TwilightOdyssey here on the forum and he's got pretty good tone from the clips I've heard.
