Best cab sim?

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
EDIT: I DID NOT MEAN TO SAY BEST!!!!!! I meant to say best "performer at a budget price"

So we are moving from mic'd cabs to direct board inputs (too many bass bleed problems on plywood stages).

I ran the slave out of my Mesa direct into the board. It did not go well, slave out not really made for DI, but no surprise.
My next step was to use a cab sim on my FX unit in the loop. That was better, but still not terribly satisfying.

So for those of you running Uber-heads into PA Mixers, what is your magic combo?

DI from speaker and a cab sim?
Have a favorite DI from a speaker out?
Slave out to the whatever you might select?

Ace - I’ve been eyeing the UA Ox for a while. Everything I’ve heard has been great.

Re: Best cab sim?

Have you tried setting cabs on something rubberized or whatever to isolate it from the stage?

The other guitar player (usually far side from bass) has/uses one. It reduced it, but not enough to make us happy. I'm on bass side - so even worse (when it happens).

We have decided to just go straight in. So my option is Slave out to cab sim, Speaker out to DI to Sim., or whatever....

Re: Best cab sim?

A little bit of research says "Hughes & Kettner Red Box"

But how will that play with a Slave vs other output???

Re: Best cab sim?

If you're looking for the best, you're after something like the Two Notes Torpedo Live, and they run roughly $900 new, $600-700 used. That'll do IRs along with power amp simulation; if you just want a cabinet sim, I'd look into one of those IR pedals since they should sound better than a Red Box.

Re: Best cab sim?

Two notes would be the ticket. If the live is too much coin, you can do the Torpedo Cab which comes in a pedal size and can be had for $300 or so used.

Okay - let's let go of the "best" comment. Bad choice of words. As always - I prefer the budget price/performer in this realm.

Re: Best cab sim?

Do you want a digital one that you can load IRs in or an analog one that goes in line with the speaker?

Off the top of my head:

"Budget" Analog solutions - H&K Red Box, A/DA GCS-2, AMT Chameleon

"Budget" Digital IR loader - Mooer Radar, Digitech Cab Dryver

Re: Best cab sim?

I was also thinking Mooer Radar since its essentially a Torpedo Cab. Buying some Celestion IRs is all you would need. I hesitated to recommend it. I think Ace wasn't too keen on all the features since its not a set and forget pedal.

Re: Best cab sim?

Not sure if this is along the lines you're looking for, but the H&K Tubemeister 5 is a true tube amp with built in power soak, (spkr off), and Red Box DI. Two channels and TMB tone controls. It's out of production but they're "used" all over the place.

Edit: Oops. Slightly misspoke there. It's not 2-ch. Just one with a switchable gain stage. Not quite the same thing.

It's still going to be two-notes (you would need the LIVE as the CAB isn't a loadbox). The only analog speaker sim I've heard that was any good is some palmer stuff, and your up there in price with them.

Now if you had a rack preamp, then you could use the Two Notes CAB no problem (just an FYI for those lurking)

Re: Best cab sim?

Ace, are you still planning on using your speaker or do you need a load box, I was assuming you were still using the speaker since you used the DI out of the Mesa and just wanted something to feed a line to the mixer instead of mic'ing the cab.

If you need a load box, that is a whole new, more expensive proposition.

Re: Best cab sim?

This thread is pure

(the "master of slaving" is dumbfounded!)

:burnout:

Re: Best cab sim?

The Red Box is cheap, but doesn't sound that great compared to modern DI options. I'd go with a modern IR pedal, like this Digitech. There are other companies that do this sort of thing, as well.

Re: Best cab sim?

If you’re looking at a load box / speaker emulator, I highly recommend the UA Ox. It is quite expensive, but I like it head and shoulders over the Two Notes Torpedo Live that I was using, which was a good unit, but the Ox is that much better to my ears.

On a lower price point, I did like the Palmer units which have been used by many pros through the years and are about 1/2 the price of the UA or Two Notes. Also, Radial has a couple that are decent for the money.
