Best Cleans for around $1200

Re: Best Cleans for around $1200

Fender Twin......... As long as you can deal with the volume and the weight. Ther ain't much cleaner and louder than a Twin. A Silverface Twin (Non master is what you want) will run less than $1200. They are not a lot of players first choice for the 2 reasons I listed earlier. They are very heavy at about 85lbs and they produce 85watts. Very loud. They take pedals very well. Think of any classic clean tone from the 60's through the 70's. They were probably recorded with a Twin.

Another good option is a Dual Showman Reverb. This is essintially a Twin in a head. Basically the same amp, but they came with bottoms that if I remember correctly came with 2 15" speakers. A Jensen D130 I think. Great amps. There is a video of the the Rolling Stones performing with John Lennon and Eric Clapton (the Dirt band I think) Eric Clapton is playing thru a Dual Showman

Re: Best Cleans for around $1200

I got my Rivera R100 Duo Twelve for $900. It's cleans can go up against pretty much any Twin and the dirty tones get very, very Marshally.

Re: Best Cleans for around $1200

Um, Roland Jazz Chorus 120. Spend the rest of the cash on other stuff.

Then again if you want it to take dirt pedals better, a silverface Twin.

Re: Best Cleans for around $1200

There's a slew of amps you could get that would get you great cleans for that amount. I would suggest a Fender Bassman RI. Mclaughy's got one and his cleans are fantastic.

Re: Best Cleans for around $1200

what's the story on the new Vox amps?

Sound good, and a mixed bag regarding reliability.

Do you have a more specific idea of what clean tone you'd like? -is it bright and sparkly or a bit more warm and thick? How loud does it need to get?

-Easily the nicest clean amp I've played recently was the Carr Vincent. I imagine those are out of budget for new, but maybe you could grab one secondhand...

Re: Best Cleans for around $1200

I picked up my 1968 Silverface Fender Showman Reverb for about 400 dollars. I put another 150 to 200 into it, and it does some badass cleans.

Also, I can't say enough about the clean channel on my Hughes & Kettner edition tube 20. Very clear, very bell-like. Can't get as loud as the showman, but gets some nice break-up to it when you really crank the volume. The dirt channel isn't anything special, and the reverb is pretty weak. But that clean channel justifies the whole **** amp. I got that one for a little over 200 from a forum bro.

There are PLENTY of options out there amigo ;).

According to Guitarist Australia (and I assume guitarist UK) the Carr Vincent is the best clean sound they've ever heard just thought I'd add that I so want to try one!

Re: Best Cleans for around $1200

The Roland is probably the best clean if you don't want to use pedals, it sounds great, and doesn't distort like a Twin does. That being said, the Twin will be warmer than the Roland. It all comes down to personal preference.

Re: Best Cleans for around $1200

Look up "Fender Ultimate Chorus"

It's a 90's and early 2000's solid state stereo 2x12" 130 watt amp (2 separate 65 watt power amps, oddly enough) that's clean and loud, and loud and clean, and just...clean.

Re: Best Cleans for around $1200

Less $$ than most of the amps mentioned, and super cleans...takes pedals as well as any amp ever could...has a half power switch for around 75 watts, and has what is the best phaser effect I've ever heard. Good stuff in the Music Man amps...they were Leo Fender's pride and joy.

I actually have an Ultimate Chorus that I'm selling. Was going to put it in the trading post this week...so if lousy_player, or anyone else wants it, hit me up ;)
