Best Dimarzio?

Re: Best Dimarzio?

I'm thinking of going with the d sonic, super d, steve's special, or the evolution.

Re: Best Dimarzio?

Best Dimarzio for what? There is no such thing as the best for everyone.

For me, the best Dimarzio is VPAF or VHPAF with Alnico2 magnets.

Re: Best Dimarzio?

YJM/HS-3, VHPaf with either A5 or A2 mag (have one of each). Honorable mention: AirZone/ToneZone

Re: Best Dimarzio?

The Super D is a classic for a reason. It's big, fat, and surprisingly versatile. All of the rails pickups I've tried have been either good or great, and the old VV lineup made for a great sounding strat set up. It wasn't completely a true single coil sound, but there was a lot of that in there along with more punch, no noise, and a friendlier high end.

Re: Best Dimarzio?

Super D.

Other Dimarzio pickups I have used I havent cared for. Maybe that is becasue I dont have a basswood guitar?

Re: Best Dimarzio?

Evolution. For me its extremely articulate, well-balanced EQ, tons of harmonics and just sounds pissed off.

Re: Best Dimarzio?

Bridge: Evolution. Extremly tight and clear, insane harmonics, killer rhythm ton and just a kickass pup.

Neck: Air Norton. Huge, fat and fluid lead tone under gain and very warm jazzy cleans. Even with all the bass and mids in this pup it's always aritculate and has quite some cool harmonics.

Re: Best Dimarzio?

I really liked the FS-1 in the bridge position of my Strat. Beefed it up nicely, but kept the single coil vibe. Having said that, I like the Duncan TwangBanger better :)

Re: Best Dimarzio?

Dimazrio is one of the most creative PU makers. Gotta admire that. They have a lot of good products.

From a blues/classic rock view, I like their Fred, Air Norton, Virual PAF, and Bluesbucker.

Re: Best Dimarzio?

Anyone ever tried the d sonic? Also i've heard the evo 2 a lot of people like it better than the original.

Re: Best Dimarzio?

I really like the Evolution bridge, Steve's Special, Air Norton (in brighter guitars for the neck), and the Tone Zone. I am waiting for a PAF Joe for the neck of a Jackson (30 day exchange), I am looking brighter match for the Evolution bridge than the Evolution neck.

I have a few guitars with Dimarzios, but most are Duncan.

...and that being said, the Crazy 8 is still king of pups for most of my guitars.

Re: Best Dimarzio?

I haven't used enough of any company's pickups to really judge which one is the best.

Like other people have mentioned, the Super Distortion is a classic.

The Pre-BS Tele pickup was very good IMO. Back in the mid '70s, it was the only Tele pickup on the market.

I like the PAF. My Hamer came with them. It's one of the reasons my first parts Tele got DiMarzio PAFs.

I like the more recent Tone Zone. I used that as the only pickup on a Tele I put together with a cheap swamp ash body. Nice pickup for a one pickup guitar because it has good dynamics, and it's not too bright.

Re: Best Dimarzio?

Tone Zone for me caus it really brought my bright wolfgang around. Now its full and warm.

Re: "Fave" Dimarzio?

Re: "Fave" Dimarzio?

My fave DiMarzio pickup is the D Sonic. I like (love) it because it sounds modern and feels great for Heavy Metal. Under high gain is where it shines, as the cleaness of the pickup lends a feel under heavy distortion that just feels heavy (and sounds heavy). It's just as capable of soloing and my big detuned strings NEVER sound like mush. Open sounding and the balance between brightness and warmth just make this my favorite pickup for my style. Also, it sounds great in the bridge of an Alder-bodied superstrat.
