Best Dimarzio?

Re: Best Dimarzio?

I'm a huge fan of the Air Zone, Tone Zone, Air Classic, and Fred. The Air Zone & Tone Zone are my favorite high output pickups, because they're super fat sounding instead of just super loud. The Air Classic is the best PAF I've heard yet, and the Fred is just an awesome pickup, in the neck & bridge.

Re: Best Dimarzio?

The first two, IMO are still the best two..overall.

Super Distortion. THE pickup (barring Gibson stock PAFS of the day) for my preferences in music. It's agressive and thick, cleans up well, and is surprisingly versatile. It has a nice "touch" under the fingers. It ain't a bad neck pup either if you like high gain soloing.

PAF: Its not the sweetest PAF type. But its again very versatile, and MOST IMPORTANTLY...VERY balanced tonally. This a big prob I have with some other PAF types. DiMarzios PAFs are not too middy, not scooped, not too bassy, not too dark or not too bright.

The Air Classic/PAF classic is nice too..a little more sweet and chimey but still fairly balanced.

AZ is a great pickup for a hard rockin trem bridge strat type guitar. Thicker and bassier than the SuperD, and a bit more "round", but it's also less crunchy and less agressive...personal taste and all that :D

Re: Best Dimarzio?

Only used 3 but they were all complete keepers for me.

MegaDrive, DoubleWhammy, AirNorton...

The MegaDrive and DoubleWhammy don't sound like anything else out the IMO, and have an absolutely AMAZING lead tone.

Re: Best Dimarzio?

A few for me...

For Strats,I use & like the Chopper/nk & FT-2/br.Trying a Pro Track soon,also.

For HBs,the PAF Pro is in "most" of my guitars at the nk,& I like the Super III & Norton a LOT!!!

Re: Best Dimarzio?

air norton(neck)/tonezone(Bridge) combo..
though ive been favoring the tonezone(neck)/X2N(bridge) combo lately.

Re: Best Dimarzio?

The Air Zone is my favorite. Works well with both high and low gain amps. Singing highs, really nice lows, a good dose of mids and it's very full sounding all around. It splits amazingly well too. I have it matched up with an Air Norton S that is simply amazing.

I also like the Super Distortion, PAF and PAF Pro. It's a toss up between the PAF Pro and Air Norton for my favorite neck pickup.

Re: Best Dimarzio?

PAF pro is the best all around Dimarzio I've played. It's like the 59 Duncan to me.. I've not played the latter however but from the description.. It's great for mahogany bodied guitars.. I'd not play it on a bright guitar.. It's a bright vintagy woody sounding pickup. I also like the Tone Zone for a trem guitar.. and the Distortion 3 is a great Shred pickup.. It has great bass and mids and just seems to cut. That said, I love the DD distortion better for an all around pup..

Re: Best Dimarzio?

I stay away from the high output pickups. I used to have a guitar with a Tone Zone, and it sounded big, although I wonder if it would have sounded more alive in a different guitar.

I've had good results with the PAF Pro (in the bridge position), the Air Norton (fantastic neck pickup), and the Virtual PAF neck (very clear, hi-fi but not sterile). I would say there are a few of their medium and vintage output pickups that I really like. I like the fact that the PAF Pro does not sound compressed in the guitar I currently have it in. It has a nice percussive attack when I hit a power chord.

The only Dimarzio I owned that I didn't agree with was a squealy microphonic Super Distortion that came in a guitar I bought in 1980.
