Set too high, pickups can cause a myriad of inexplicable phenomena. Depress all of the strings at the last fret. Using 6" (150 mm) ruler, measure the distance from the bottom of the 1st and 6th strings to top of the pole piece. Rule of thumb-the distance should be greatest at the 6th string - neck pickup position, and closest at the 1st string - bridge pickup position. Follow the measurement guidelines from the chart as starting points. The distance will vary according to the amount of magnetic pull of the pickup.
try 6/64" (2.4 mm) Bass Side, 5/64" (2 mm) Treble Side to start

With both "E" strings depressed at the 21st or 22nd frets..Measured from top of the pickup poles to the bottom of each E string.
I Like my neck pickups at around 4/32" bass and 3.5/32" treble...
I have my middle adjusted about the same as the neck...For some reason I always feel that the higher strings dominate and so I like the treble string sides of my pickups at ot just a bit lower than the low E string....Not sure why,but my ears and my instincts tell me?
Bridge pickup to 3/32" Bass and around 3/32" treble...All the fine tuning is done while playing and listening and looking for a balance both across the pickups and from neck to bridge...
I use the Texas Hot bridge and Surfers...I Like my pickups lower because I feel the tone is more articulate and I stay away from "stratitis" also and still get all the sustain and great tones from my pickups..
These measurements work for my gear,style,and ears,but you have to listen and adjust until you find what works? Alot of guys like their single coils alot closer to the strings,but I don't.
