Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

The DDJ i scored a week ago is hands down thee metal pickup! I used emg's,live wires and even tried the blackouts but the distortion is the only one that still has things about it that the others do not. it even has a decent clean tone if i dont set it real close:fing2: duncan hit a home run with this one as usual!

+1!!!!!

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

I've voted the Custom. It's a great middle ground for most genres, is tighter and has less fizz than the DD. Not to say I dislike the Distortion, though. There is a certain character with the core tone of the Distortion that makes palm mutes sound explosive.

Yes, the DD definately has the punchiest palm mute I have ever heard, like scott Ian palm muted sound with a bit more thump.

The hybrid I was talking about has that same palm mute with even more thump and the fizz is gone. Miss are really fat. Pickup has a very fast and clear attack

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

I have always used a DD set for hard rock and metal. While the C-5/PGn set is my favorite for an all around Les Paul, the DD set is by far my favorite passive ripper in most any guitar.

The DDn/Seymourizer is the most over-looked pickup in the line IMHO. Its a must have in any situation and i like it far mor than a JB in the neck.

Just saying...

Is the DDn the same as the seymourizer? didnt know that. What makes the DDn so nice? I figured it would be overkill. I usually use a 59b in the neck, or a Jazz. Ive never tried a DDneck. only the DD in the bridge. Whi

I've tried the JB, DD, Custom, Custom Custom, Custom 5 and Dimebucker. I've heard a ton of the Invader too. I'm partial to the Custom, although I now use a Custom 8. It's tight aggressive, clear, retains somewhat of a classic vibe but can rip your face off too. Hitting a power chord with with the Custom is just like...RAWWWRRR. Lol that's the only way I can describe it. Of the others there was always something in the rhythm or lead tone I couldn't get along with, but the Custom seems to bridge that gap for me and gives me a really good tone for both.

I too, LOVE me a C8!

may i add
the JB8 is duncan's indirect masterful metal machine
beats all the rest by a good margin for flexibility and focus in the spectrum, the midrange is key.
does leads best of all, the rhythm can be set with full or lite amp gain and still sound dead on correct.

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

As a rule the JB but I've had good luck with more death metal stuff with the invader. Generally my metal sound is more along the lines of QOTSA. All around I get dirty blues to full on crunch with the JB. Of course, there's this ESP Hybrid I have that just doesn't play pretty with a JB. Considering a 59/Custom Hybrid. Aside of the ironically similar names I've read nothing but good about it and really want to give it a shot.

I think this is my first post so please be kind.

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

The only Duncan I've played that I didn't love for metal was the Alt. 8. It had a really good sound but it was really bassy and it's mids weren't aggressive enough for me.

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

. . . also good for Blues Grass & Jazz ;)

Did you just bump an old thread to tell us that an Invader is good for Blues Grass and Jazz? And it's in a best passive for metal thread?
I can't let you off the hook for this. :laugh2:

Late '60's stock Gibson humbuckers in an SG Standard. Best "metal" sound I've ever personally come up with. Mini humbuckers (i.e. LP Deluxe) would be next on my list. P-90's work well too, as do stock '60's Strat pickups. My favorite metal tones were played before any of the pickups in the poll existed.

I find this interesting, as sometimes I get a great mid heavy metal tone with single coils in a telecaster. Really must depend on what sounds inspiring.

I did a blog post a while back and got a bunch of hate mail for saying my Dimebucker is great for 60s era classic rock. But, it actually is. Plugged into my Fender Excelsior it breaks up the amp very nicely and gives me awesome Stones and Beatles tones. Think Helter Skelter or Brown Sugar. I also have it coil split and split I can play any style with it.

Here is the blog post, be kind and gentle.

Not that I play that music but that is very interesting what you say about the sh13.... Being that its so bright sounding I think I can imagine what you're saying..... Hmmmmm

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

Distortion's winning by a landslide...

What's the big diff between the Dist & the PATB-2?

I've got an old Seymourizer/PATB-2 combo, but I'm trying to figure which guitar would suit them best...

Re: best duncan passive pickup for metal?

I can't say best since it really depends on "what metal" and "what guitar" we are talking about.
My choices are
1) PATB2 for Basswood and Alder. Well balanced, lovely harmonics, tracks fast and has serious punch. The best sustain and bendings in the bunch.

2) PATB1 in LP. Nothing kicks as much butt as that. Heavy, punchy. It tracks well and is not muddy. Till Drop C it holds very well. Not suited for fast stuff like Modern Thrash or Progressive/Powermetal. But everything else just fine.

3) Full Shred: Best definition, very punchy and articulated with the right height/Screw adjustement. Also perfect for 1 Hum guitars. Kills in LP, or other Mahogany guitars. Lacks lows in Alder or Maple, sings in Hi-end Basswood, lacks character in cheap guitars. Nothing in Duncan Catalog can cope with Low tunings (C and lower) as good as FS does. A very special Humbucker.

These are my Favorits.
I think you just solved my bridge pickup selection problem. Any opinion on a neck pickup for a mahogany body guitar with a three piece maple neck, baritone scale 6 string? I'm thinking the drop and gain by lace or the black winter but neither mention tuning below drop c. I can't find anything about a good passive pickup for tuning that low. It also need to have a good clean sound. Oh and one more thing, hours the clean tones of the full shred?
