Best Flatwound strings?

Looking for some 10 gauge Flatwounds for my Semi Hollow for that jazzy snazzy sound and feel. So far the Gibsons look good.
Im not sure who else makes a good flatwound?

aye yai yai! 25 bucks! I guess I mean the best flatwounds at a reasonable price. I can't afford those.

Re: Best Flatwound strings?

I dont like the Chromes- to me they feel stiff. Those aren't flatwounds are they?
I might try the 1/2 wounds, but am wanting to use flatwounds.

Re: Best Flatwound strings?

If yer gonna cheep out on flats go with the Daddario Chromes.

They are flats which sound and feel NOTHING like half wounds.

They are stiff but it's because they are flatwound...all flats are stiff when compared to same gauge rounds.

Just a word here. I play Thomastik Jazz Swing flatwounds in .010-.044 gauge; and I find them to last so long that it pretty much absorbs the initial cost. Just sayin', I don't think there really is a good substitute.

Re: Best Flatwound strings?

I believe the Pyramids and Thomastik's are the only flats with pure nickel wrap, most of the others use stainless steel, that makes a big difference in tone. The Pryamids are expensive, but Pyramid strings give the old 50'-60's sound, not as bright as the modern stainless steel wrapped strings. And the tone lasts a long time, so you have to consider that in the price. They are not dull sounding, the 12-string sets are great for the early Beatles 12-string sound, and have some snap to them. I love Pyramid strings, can't always afford them (I have around 7 electric guitars), but when I can get some on sale I grab some. I like the Pyramid Classic pure nickel-wound round-wounds, I think they are the best round-core pure nickel string around, they cost twice as much as most other strings but it is worth it, IMO. But those are round-wounds. The flats are equally awesome.

Also, doesn't Rotosound make a Monel-wrap flat wound string?. Monel is a nickel composition, and might be a good compromise. Never used them myself, and this is from memory and might be wrong, maybe you should check them out. I might be remembering the bass strings.

I know this is an old thread but here I go with my input. I say Thomastik or Pyramid. I've tried Chromes a few times and they feel stiff, too stiff. I think they are hex wound that's why. Thomastik and Pyramid are round core so they give more and feel better. I was doing exclusively Thomastik but recently wanted to give Pyramids a go on my Fender Jazzmaster. I love Thomastik but the Pyramids were better for my Jazzmaster in my opinion. Very close but Pyramids won out.

Costly yes but some things to consider - 1) Pyramid and Thomastik feel and sound the best, and 2) They last for a year even with a lot of playing so the price isn't that much considering how long they last. So if you can't afford them now and you can save up your money for a few months then buy them they'll last you a whole year. Consider that.
