Best Flipping $20 I've Ever Spent!!!!! Look At My Nut....

Ahhh Haaa, I made a nut pun!!!
Alright now that I've got that out of my system I should be good....

LOL, I bought a 2015 Gibson Double Cut Special with the Zero Fret Nut a few months ago and it is a terrific guitar! At least it's a terrific guitar when its in tune, LOL!!! Apparently some genius at Gibson decided that making the nut out of brass was a good idea, it was not... :smack:

After looking into this issue which was actually pretty important (I really want to be rid of the G-Force but with the tuning instability I almost had to keep it) I found out that Gibson was offering replacement nuts made out of Titanium to rectify the problem with the strings cutting into the nut & binding up. So I went ahead and got one but while I was waiting for it to arrive I also found out that Graph Tech had come up with one specifically for the 2015 Gibson's!!!

When I checked it out it just looked like a superior design? The Gibson nut has these sharks teeth that have to be part of the problem & they really don't fit very well. These have more of a traditional leaning design and they are made out of TUSQ synthetic Ivory so not only do they fit & function much better, but at a glance they look almost like a regular nut! Before when it was stock it kinda just looked like it was missing... They are also cut quite well & pretty much drop right in, there was a small bur on one side but I knocked that down and it fit perfectly!!!

Got it installed & setup this afternoon and holy cow, what an improvement!!! I slammed the strings for about 45mins & the G-Force barely moved afterwards! Now I can finally get rid of it and get some normal F-ING tuners!!!

Definitely the best $20 I've spent in years

Re: Best Flipping $20 I've Ever Spent!!!!! Look At My Nut....

Is that one still adjustable like the OEM
Those look like Allen's in there

I really like that about the zero fret OEM's

Re: Best Flipping $20 I've Ever Spent!!!!! Look At My Nut....

They're awesome, fully adjustable but otherwise it's more or less just a TUSQ L.P. nut...

I suppose it's technically not a "Gibson Adjustable Zero Fret Nut" anymore, just an adjustable nut but it sure as heck works & even sounds a lot better to some extent! My tuning stability has improved ten fold & so has the sustain!!!

The brass and I'd imagine the same would be true for the titanium one, had a kinda tinny sound to it when you played open cords & such. It wasn't necessarily a bad sound but it just wasn't quite right either??? The pickup's in this thing are extremely percussive so the combination could be a little overwhelming with a bright amp setting..

It's just not the same as like a Ibanez zero fret where it sounds exactly the same as the rest of the fretboard...

I've always loved the graph tech stuff. Super high quality.

I have TUSQ-XL nuts on my SG, 335, and Charvel partscaster. Highly recommended.

And thats great, I do too, but lets not kid ourselves.., A professionally cut bone nut by a competent Luthier is still the best course of action. I use Tusq cause its fairly easy to make a decent nut by a fool such as myself. Not that Tusq isn't a fine material, cause it is, but I want genuine bone cut and fit by a pro if at all possible.

Not I, I'll take TUSQ anytime. Don't forget the saddles. And if they ever came up with frets, I'll get those too.

That would be an amazing Custom Strat or Tele!!! Tons of sparkle and all the added sustain, gorgeous!!!

Re: Best Flipping $20 I've Ever Spent!!!!! Look At My Nut....

Yamaha have a similar setup on there floyd nuts.

Yamaha & Ibanez have had the Zero Fret mastered for years!!! I want to say that Yamaha was the first major manufacturer to use it but it could have been Ibanez too? Perhaps Gibson should have taken a Field Trip to Japan to see how it's done correctly before putting them on every single guitar they made that year!!!

TusqXL is one product that delivers in every way. It may cost a bit more than the alternatives, but you'll never care once your guitar performs better.

I'm no fan of the Gibson brass nut, but at least that one is easy to replace. I always let a serious pro dig a nut out of a Gibson, since they're lacquered in there on many models.
They first score it with a razor, then cut a slot down the middle of it and implode it inwards so it doesn't chip the surrounding area.

Hows that a zero fret? She looks like a normal nut that's height adjustable?

+1

TUSQ has uniform density, so there is literally no chance of tonal variance from one piece to another. In the case of TUSQ-XL, it's permanently self-lubricating so it'll work better with a vibrato than any bone nut.

I suppose technology it's not??? The Graph Tech replacement is basically just an adjustable nut that will drop in to the 2015 Gibson Z.F.N. slot & function much better....

Unlike Gibson's design there's no actual zero-fret made from metal that the strings can rest on. There again, really Gibson's design isn't much different... There is a bar that the strings rest on but it's part of the nut & not a separate fret. So really it's basically just an adjustable nut exactly like the Graph Tech but made out of brass...
