What in your opinion is the best "off the line" production guitar available with a floyd? Set neck is a must which really narrows it down.

ANY ESP with a Floyd. I've owned four ESP's so far and all have been top notch. And ALL were/are Korean-made LTD models. I can't imagine how good the Japanese stuff is (and this is coming from a guy who owned two PRS Custom 24's with "10" tops and bird inlays).

Maybe ESPs aren't my thing, but I've owned a few of the MIJ ones and I could never unload them fast enough. I've never seen an ESP that even remotely holds a candle to an SL-1.

As much as i love edge tremelo's, i don't see how you can say they will put any normal floyd to shame, i have a late 80's German floyd rose pro on my heartfield and i've never so much as once had tuning stability issues, whereas of the few times i've played edge trems, though they may have been badly set up, twice did they lose tune.

but anyway, the Schecter Hellraiser C1-FR is a set-neck guitar with an OFR, so is the ESP LTD MH-1000FR, Jackson is worthless as far as set-neck guitars go, same goes for BC Rich...actually Schecter and ESP seem to be the only companies which make FR'd guitars with set necks...
personal taste probably, I've played 4 soloists and they all didn't give me "the vibe" :shrug:

SET neck with a floyd???.... Neal Schon les Paul is about the only one I can think of, all the others are bolt on or Neckthru....
Look for something with an Original Floyd, Gotoh Floyd, Schaller or Ibanez Edge, anything else is substandard in comparison....

Locking nut is an option. (option LN)
(Carvin uses graphtech nuts and sperzel locking tuners. So depending on how nuts you go on the trem will decide if a locking nut is necessary for you)
DC127 (neck thru, rounded body, standard inline headstock)
Dc127(neck thru, standard beveled edge body, Pointy inline headstock)
CT6 (set neck)

That's a bad comparison. A poorly setup Floyd won't stay in tune, either. As far as the Floyd vs. Edge thing, they're both as good as it gets, so it comes down to feel.

i think the ibanez feels smoother with a slower bend than normal floyds. not sure how you can really compare two guitars when one has a bad setup, but whatever. good quality floyds are just as good but i prefer the ibanez.
also why is it SO important to have the guitar be a set neck? i cant understand how this matters so much. none of the 'high end' guitars with floyds are set neck so you are really limiting your options here for something that seems moot.

Ah yeah, ESP has a new Eclipse FR model but if you're in the US it might be kinda hard to get, but certainly cheaper than the Schon model.

Another vote for ESP LTD's...
I have 2 and they're great guitars. Haven't had any problems at all with them staying in tune.
One thing I liked better about the ESP's vs. Jacksons and Ibanez is that the ESP's have 2 volume controls. Alot of the Jacksons and Ibanez'es I check out at the time only had 1 master volume control.
Another vote for ESP LTD's...

+1. I don't generally like Ibanez guitars, but I LOVE their Edge tremolos. They are soooo buttery smooth- but some don't like that. The only guitar I tried that has a trem as smooth as an Ibanez Edge is a Parker Fly.

Consistently it has confounded me why more players don't demand set necks and more guitars aren't equipped with them.

because:
1. bolt ons: cheaper to manufacture + easy to fix if something goes wrong.
2. neck thru: better access to the upper frets b/c no neck joint
