Best funk compressor

Anyone have any advice on what a good compressor to check out for funk styles would be ?

Everything I see/read always leans towards chicken pickin' country licks or endless sustain and I'm not really looking for either of those things out of the pedal.

I just want some nice balanced dynamic control and low noise really. Id pretty much just be playing with single coils and don't really need any control over the attack either.

Would be shooting towards those 80's Prince tones like "Controversy"

Dyna Comp always seems to standard, Boss Cs-2 or Barber Tone Press both are highly regarded and pretty reasonable in price as well.

Visual Sounds Route 66 caught my eye as its got both the compressor cirucit and the TS808 basically thrown in for free.

Only think I don't like about it is that I'd like to put the compressor in front of my wah, and the OD after it in the chain but I belive the box is hardwired with the Comp then the OD so I'd be sort of out of luck in that regard

Any other units worth checking out ?

Re: Best funk compressor

I am curious about this as well. I have heard rave reviews about the Tone Press, but if folks in here have first hand experiences on this, I'd love to see their thoughts here.

+1 for the Tone Press, I think it's great. I try to use it in a fairly unobtrusive way, just for a bit of extra sustain on my cleans, but it's very versatile IMO. Only other compressors I have experience with are the Boss CS-3, just could not get along with this one, never found anything that added anything positive for me, and the EH Blackfinger (very noisy).

Thanks for checking in on this. A couple of questions though.. Can it do funk without altering the inside trim pot..? What settings would you use for funky hard strumming to limit the high volume levels..?

Re: Best funk compressor

I love my CPR from Homebrew Electronics. I still have an original Dyna Comp that I've owned since I heard Lowell George using one twenty or thirty years ago...but the CPR is the best one I've ever had. Very natural. Lew

Not a bad idea but I've got no clue what he was using. I've never seen much written on Prince's rig.

Re: Best funk compressor

He's a fan of Boss pedals, and uses Soldano amps. Could be a plain old Boss compressor...
