Re: Best grip from a pick?

This is very interesting timing for this posting, as I just posted a fairly long, pictorial, review of a bunch of picks on TGP that I titled "Grip Aid: another pick comparison". It's now on pg 2 of the Pedals Strings and Things forum.

There are a number of picks with "grip aids". I didn't think to include the Dunlop Max Grips, but did include a couple of Pickboy models, one each from Cactus Picks, Swisspicks and V-Picks, and several from Dava's product line.

My current favorite pick is the Dava Grip Tip, in delrin. It's a fantastic pick.

Re: Best grip from a pick?

I use tortexes, tried several others for better grip, but the feel and melllow percussiveness of tortex is superior to me. What I found to work even better with cross-hatch cutting marks is to sharpen the tip. Naturally I'm more aggressive player, but most of the time I try to relax and ease up. With a sharper point there's less contact area and less chance pick will move between my fingers.
I know Dunlop makes most of their picks with sharper tips also, but I found those too small for me, so each time I get a fresh batch, I shave the tip with a razor blade and sand it a little.

Re: Best grip from a pick?

Dunkop Max Grip Jazz III's for me. I also dig Ultex and the new Petrucci Jazz III's.

Re: Best grip from a pick?

Once I tried v-picks all of my other picks felt slippery until I tried gorilla snot. I like the thickness of the TECKPICK but the anodized aluminum finish doesn't have much of a grip.

Re: Best grip from a pick?

I was using tortex orange. Had a gross of them so I could put some in every case. discovered Jazz IIIs. Bought a bunch. Discovered the Eric Johnson ones and switched to them.. THEN... Found the Max grip Jazz IIIs carbon fiber. HOLY smoke! gave all my other picks to the kids... Sad thing is, Sweetwater is the only place I can find that carries them.. But the grip is amazing.

I'll have to try these out. I am finding them on ebay and amazon as well.

Re: Best grip from a pick?

I take a paper punch and punch a hole in mine, makes the grip much better! Kind of like the ones with the star hole.
