Best guitar for modding?

Whats the best guitar to buy purely to mod the hell out of? I wouldnt want to spend loads on the original purchase as so much would be replaced, but obviously i do need a resonant body and a nice neck. After seeing various XSSIVE threads of awesome guitars modded up, its made me start GASSin.

I'm pretty sure i want to go strat shaped, and at the end of it i want a high quality guitar, this is not to make a spare guitar to throw around. What sort of strat should i be looking for? Obviously hardwear and stuff will all be replaced anyway, but i need to make sure the body wood and neck are good.

I would change tuners and bridge (i hear the hipshot hardtail is good?), as well as all electronics and pickups, and probably slap one of those cool metal-plate pickguards on it. I am definately prepared to spend money on this, and wait and take my time to do it, but if i am going to end up spending alot of money and getting a sub-standard guitar for what i spend, then i would definately think again about doing it.

So questions...
Best guitar to go for? (maybe even warmoth?)
Is it worth it?

Thanks guys, sorry for the long-ish post, hope i can get some help.

Re: Best guitar for modding?

you can grab a highway 1 body off ebay (lacquer finished...) and a good warmoth neck for cheap. You can then slap on a bridge and pickups to taste....

Re: Best guitar for modding?

If you are looking for a specific guitar......Telecaster! It screams to be modded, simple yet it can do virtually anything from Jazz to blues to metal and everything inbetween.

Re: Best guitar for modding?

If nothing is staying stock, just go the Warmoth route.

I agree with JumpMarine, Tele's are great to mod.

Re: Best guitar for modding?

ao good cheep Strat is hard to beat for butchering...you have the choice of a tremolo or not (use it or block it), plus there are a larg number of Strats with a universal rout, meaning that new pickups and a guard plate is all that stands between you and whatever pickup combo you want! Plus...Strats can be had for very little cash a lot of times!

Re: Best guitar for modding?

I got a Fender MIM body off Ebay (went that route to get a specific color), got the neck from USACG as it was cheaper than Warmoth for the specs I wanted, and the rest of the hardware as I found deals.

Re: Best guitar for modding?

go for ebay man...i built a whole US strat from new and lightly used parts mostly off ebay for less than what a US strat costs (my pewter strat). i got a 2004 never used MIA strat neck and a used but flawless pewter MIA strat body from ebay and a set of chrome locking fender/schaller tuners from ebay also. then i got a 62 reissue bridge for it and other real fender hardware from music shops online then a custom cut pickguard and backplate from warmoth and electronics of my choice from other online shops. all this came out less than a new stock MIA strat would have been and it's 100% what i wanted. and if you can't find what you want on ebay, warmoth is a great choice too!!

Im not worthy to touch one ...let alone mod it :22:

Re: Best guitar for modding?

Teles are my vote. Actually, I remember reading somewhere that they're the most modified guitar in the world. I don't doubt it, since most of the off-the-rack ones that I've played (including my Bastardcaster, when I bought it) are simply awful.

Re: Best guitar for modding?

i';d say a strat. Get a MIM fender strat or a highway one and mod away! Change the gaurd and add or remove pick ups. Hell u can even change the enck if you wnat thats the beauty of it.

Re: Best guitar for modding?

Cheers guy, i'll probably surf around ebay and try and score some nice parts.

Re: Best guitar for modding?

you can't go wrong with a strat or tele as far as modding is concerned...there's just tons of parts out there for both!!!
