Hello Hello--
An old friend of mine named Pete Banks. He played on Yes's first two albums and was replaced by Steve Howe. Been doing different bands and solo stuff ever since.
Ollie Halsall-- in a band called "Patto" that broke up in 1972. He pre-dated all the guys [including Holdsworth} in rock for the legato-style of playing.
Brian.

Re: Best guitar players youve never heard of

Joel. he was my teacher. mix YJM with SRV and EVH and you have a general idea of him.

Re: Best guitar players youve never heard of

Lew Alcinda - from LA4 - and others.

The man would seduce your ear. Sans shredding.

Re: Best guitar players youve never heard of

Kaki King- the best and most experimental guitar player out there check out her debut cd and relize that all the percussion are all done by her while she's playing by slapping the **** out of her adamas. Her two hand tapping on the acoustic is phenomanal.

Re: Best guitar players youve never heard of

Keller Williams - Plays practically every acoustic instrument you can think of, amazing.

Re: Best guitar players youve never heard of

Strangely enough I've actually heard of a lot of these people!

Re: Best guitar players youve never heard of

J Mascis... formerly of Dinosaur Jr. and now with J. Mascis and the Fog. This guy's playing and tone are incredible but he can't sing worth a damn which keeps him down, which I think he prefers anyway. Do yourself a favor and download the song "Say the Word" from the Free So Free album... not one wasted note. Then check out "Ammaring" from More Light and "Alone" from Hand It Over. (Jazzmaster through Plexi)

Re: Best guitar players youve never heard of

Charlie Baty - Little Charlie and the Nightcats

Jump Blues but he mixes in everything from Charlie Christian to Surf to Setzer and leaves jaws on the floor everytime I see him.

Peter Banks rocked even back in 1969..those first 2 Yes albums have great playing all over them.

I'd like to add to this list:
Trey Gunn: Inventive Warr guitar player
David Torn: surreal looping master
Adrian Belew: King Crimson's vocalist is also an amzing guitarist, able to get sounds unheard of
Adrian Legg: some of the prettiest head-spinning acoustic guitar ever

Hello Hello--
Yeah, and it was all played on a Rickenbacker guitar, too!
Brian.

Right on man!!! I lOVED Pete Banks' playing with Yes and Flash afterwards! In some ways I think Steve Howe appropriated certain elements of Banks style for his own and NEVER gave Peter the credit he deserved!

Ollie Halsall was a quirky genius alright! Funny thing with his is that he and Holdsworth were developing similar ideas about guitar completely independent of each other, then they crossed paths briefly in Tempest. Ollie could play some mean keyboards and vibes as well!

And The Owl adds;

Harvey Mandell

Anthony Phillips

Steve Khan

Mike Miller

Wayne Johnson

Phil Miller (National Health, Hatfield and the North)

Joop Von Nmwgen (Dutch virtuoso w/ Finch)

Mick Abrams Jethro Tull (first album), Blodwyn Pig
