Best Guitar Tuning Keys

Hey....i would like to hear what you guys think are the best guitar tuning keys. I need some new ones for my epiphone...cause they are terrible. I was thinking maybe Sperzel or Grover? I want something that will hold in tune really good....as we all do. Give me your thoughts.

Re: Best Guitar Tuning Keys

I have Grovers on my LP Standard. I had trouble with the G-string, but after some adjusting they all work fine.

If I were to do it again though, I'd go Sperzel. ;)

Re: Best Guitar Tuning Keys

I had Sperzels on my other guitar ...and they rocked....i didn't know if there was something better out there or not.

Re: Best Guitar Tuning Keys

Any locking tuners, like Sperzel or Schallers. LSR made great 40:1 locking tuners a few years ago as well.

Re: Best Guitar Tuning Keys

Yeah, the LSR Gearless tuners were unbelievable. I think they´re even still around, just hard to find.

I personally prefer Sperzels on "general axes" without locking nuts (with a locking trem, the tuners aren´t really an issue, Non-lockings do just fine). But I use Grover and Kluson Locking tuners on instruments that were originally outfitted with these in a Non-locking style. Again, I prefer to keep the hardware as close to stock as possible on vintage and "future vintage" instruments ;)

Re: Best Guitar Tuning Keys

Sperzel locking tuners for my Strat were the best damn $50 I ever spent.

Re: Best Guitar Tuning Keys

YOu mentioned both... Sperzel, and Grovers. Ther both great go with either, it won't be a mistake. I have sperzel locking tuners on a strat.. have not had any trouble with them (except seeing the tiny hole on the rare occassions I break a string). I also have grovers on two acoustic guitars, and an SG. No problem!!! LOL

Re: Best Guitar Tuning Keys

Well for the most part I go with Schallers, either standard of locking. My Fender style guitars all have locking my Gibsons have Schaller, Grover and Gotoh and I don't have problems with any of them. I'd get a new nut or get the one you have cleaned up before you worry about new pegs though. Epi's usually have poorly cut plastic nuts and besides killing tone make it a bitch to keep in tune.

Re: Best Guitar Tuning Keys

Sperzel Locking Tuners, definitely! Never heard anything bad about them, and it's no coincidence that they're getting high recommendations and gaining popularity. I've had Fender, Schaller, Grover and Gotoh. Fender does ok, but I've always felt doubtful whether they could withstand extensive playing. I don't have Schaller anymore, it was sold with the axe I bought them with. I think it was due to the unstable (newly placed by a luthier) neck, but the guitar didn't stay in tune all that well. The guitar would stay in tune when I kept it in my bedroom, but when I took it to bandpractice with me I almost always had to tune it again. I'm not dissin' Schaller, to prove it I'm seriously considering buying another axe with all Schaller hardware :)
I still have Grover on my V, pretty excellent though it's no Sperzel that's for sure. It does go out of tune, but only when I don't play it for a very long time. I also still have Gotoh, these are also very excellent similar to Grover in quality. I have to admit I don't use the tuners a lot though, because the guitar has a locking nut. But when I do, they're great!
