Alder + Maple neck. Mahogany w/ Maple cap + Mahogany neck. Both, any fretboard. Those are the best. Tried and true.
To own both a Fender or similar, AND a Gibson or similar, will complete your spectrum of \m/
Not a fan of Basswood; however, many guitars and guitarists sound great with Basswood. I just prefer the cleans of Alder more even though Basswood seems to cut better in high gain lead.

Oh, my bad! That was totally unintentional. I was on my mobile, totally bored at work, and this thread was in the first few pages. Or so I thought... (The Twilight Zone theme song begins to play)...
