Best High-gain rhythm pickup

Re: Best High-gain rhythm pickup

Your all wrong. (except for one person) hahaha.

The Demon. 'specially in a 24.75. = ). Thats if you want tight, punchy, seething balls.

If you want something a bit looser with less presence, the Invader will work for ya.

Or an Alt-8. Love the Alt-8.

But, Demon is best. Doesn't muddy no matter much gain you throw at it, has a hugely tight, percussive pop to the lows, and has a distinct "growl" or "seething" type sound that I love.

Re: Best High-gain rhythm pickup

What kind of guitar is it in?
Does the guitar have a tremolo?

If so, I would have to say the PATB-3. I know what you are thinking "But its supposed to be all Vintage and Paflike right?"

Its a tight pickup, with a big bottom, and it has serious grunt. Like, through a high gain amp it's everything I look for in a metal rhythm tone. It's heavy, chunky, responsive, barks and grunts, its great.

Re: Best High-gain rhythm pickup

Well I use a hot rails in the neck and love it for solos, and I don't plan on changing it. So I want a bridge that can balance well with the hot neck.

So far I'm liking the distortion or custom? What do you guys think of a JB with a normal sized ceramic magnet? I really want to try this out, but I want to know what people think of it.

I've considered the PATB series or a Demon because of their unique qualities. Wish there were more clips of them on youtube or something.

How is the full shred for detuning?
That I woulnd't know. I have it in 3 or 4 Floyd equipped guitars, and I keep them in standard tuning. If I had one in a fixed bridge guitar, I might experiment with down-tuning it. I'm sure it'd sound great ina guitar tuned down a half step. I just don't know about tuned down to C or with a low B string.

Regarding the Demon, I believe George Lynch, who obviously uses it, tunes down a half step, and in some songs tunes to drop D. The Screamin Demon, at least in the guitar I have one in, seems to have a nice full bass that would probably make a low tuned guitar sound deep and full.

Re: Best High-gain rhythm pickup

What!? No mention of the Blackout bridge? It fits the bill pretty well for massive rhythm.

Re: Best High-gain rhythm pickup

Is it [Invader] really that bad for leads?

I really didn't like it for leads, and most seem to agree with me. However, as I say, Nile use Invaders, and they seem to manage. Whether you like their lead tone or not is another matter!
You did as for a rythm pup though, and the Invader rocks at that.

If you're going to be playing leads I'd choose something else myself like the JB.

I have a JB with two Hot Rails in my Jackson SL3 and it all works brilliantly.

Re: Best High-gain rhythm pickup

The Distortion is the best bridge pickup for me. I play most of my distorted rhythms with the bridge pickup also. The Jazz is an awesome neck pickup for leads.

Re: Best High-gain rhythm pickup

This is a good example of why the Invader is not great for soloing...

(Subsonic flubbing sounds)

It's a cool cover and song, but the solo sounds pretty bad with that pickup.

Distortion is probably best if you want really high gain tight rhythm...

I dunno, the one lead clip I've ever heard of the Invader before that.. http://youtube.com/watch?v=-QHve_gcJB8

Sounds pretty good too me. Actually, a little neck pickup like in just how round and warm it is. Though I'd imagine through an amp not EQ'd for it it could pose those flub problems.

Re: Best High-gain rhythm pickup

The solo in the first clip sounds good after the first few seconds, a tad flat-sounding but way ballsy. The early flubbing sounds more like poor technique to me.
