Hey Guys,

Let me try this again. I've got some serious hum to tame on my bridge pickup. What is the best of the humbucking single coil sized pups?

this is way too broad and too much of an opinion....it would differnt if you just wanted to know what other people think is the best........but this is actually about a pickup you want to get......you need to fill us in on what you want and what guitar its going into is before anything could come of this...

Ok...I'll clarify. Its going in a 2000 American Standard Strat with a maple fingerboard. I'm not as concerned with the specific sound as I am with just a good, middle of the road, usable tone. This is a very all purpose axe(I do a lot of studio and stage work so I'm not going after MY tone as much as Everyman's tone). The only thing I don't want is a super over the top, colored, obnoxious pickup, but I don't think any of the Duncans, aside from the JB Jr maybe, would give me that.

I just wanted a general vibe of what peoples favorites are, and maybe why.

i picked the lil 59 but i like many of them. the cool rails, vintage rails, lil demon, classic and hot stacks, jb jr, duckbuckers are all cool. i used the dimarzio virtual2's for a while and i like those too. dont really like the other virtual vintage pups though

Re: Best Hum Cancelling Single Coil Sized Bridge Pickup(Specific Enough?)

How do the Lil 59, JB Jr, and Lil Demon sound when split? I'd imagine similar to a regular split humbucker, but is it a usable tone?

Re: Best Hum Cancelling Single Coil Sized Bridge Pickup(Specific Enough?)

actually to me they sound much thinner than a split full size bucker

Re: Best Hum Cancelling Single Coil Sized Bridge Pickup(Specific Enough?)

That makes sense given the shrunken form factor. Is the tone useful? It must be in some situations or they wouldn't bother with 4 conductors, I guess. :/

Bear in mind a mini humbucker may have the advantages of a full sized humbucker, but they always have a smaller magnet.

Re: Best Hum Cancelling Single Coil Sized Bridge Pickup(Specific Enough?)

I haveonly experience wirtht he hot rails but i love that pick up alot so i voted for that!

Re: Best Hum Cancelling Single Coil Sized Bridge Pickup(Specific Enough?)

If you want just a regular strat bridge tone, then I'd try the virtual vintage serie from DMZ ... which one? Well, that's up to you as all the side by sides, and stacks don't really deliver a true enough single coil tone, the HS-3 is a good old standby, ...*if* it's bright enough for you, and *if* it's got enough juice for you (it's not a hot pup at all ). Their cruiser might work well for you, never used it myself, so I couldn't say ... if you're looking for something a bit tougher sounding, I was kinda thinking along the lines of the JB jr., just because of the harmonics ... or for a bit warmer and mellower the lil '59.
I kinda lean toward the V.V. series by DMZ on this one, or for low gain the HS series (although they don't have as truer a single coil tone), their fast track series is even a bit further from true single coil tone ...although the cruiser has gotten some good acceptance, a classic or hot stack by SD would fit the bill nicely as well, although I don't know if the hot stack would be glassy enough for your needs. If your covering *humbucker bridge pup territory*, then probably the SD JB jr., or lil '59; DMZ Chopper or Pro Track ... tough call, really it depends on how loud you need it, and how much you want it to sound like a single coil vs. a humbucker. Not much help, but maybe it will give you a set of parameters to mull over.

Re: Best Hum Cancelling Single Coil Sized Bridge Pickup(Specific Enough?)

And yes, although I clicked the DMZ offering box (works for me), it would appear my two SD choices were shared by the majority ... :) :laugh2:

Re: Best Hum Cancelling Single Coil Sized Bridge Pickup(Specific Enough?)

I voted Vintage Rail, but my real choice is whatever singles you like and the Ilitch backplate. Stacked pickups never really worked for me, but I have not tried the latest bleeding edge pickups. Vintage Rails do a fairly good job.

Probably Hot rails will sound usable when split.

I like Lil Screaming Demon a lot. Listen to these guys and tell me what do you think

Re: Best Hum Cancelling Single Coil Sized Bridge Pickup(Specific Enough?)

Mike what styles of music are you playing and what kind of amps are you generally using. Also, are you going for a mini-humbucker sound or single coil sound? This question is critical as it will probably dictate your path more than the others.

Re: Best Hum Cancelling Single Coil Sized Bridge Pickup(Specific Enough?)

What kind of sound do you want?

For the bridge I like the DiMarzio stuff. They sound like full sized buckers, none of the Duncan ones do. There is a huge range of available models though.

Re: Best Hum Cancelling Single Coil Sized Bridge Pickup(Specific Enough?)

I've personally got good results with...

-Duncan Cool rails and Hot rails for versatility (series and parallel wiring work equally good) ;
-Bill Lawrence L280 if it comes to approximate a CBS era Strat tone;
-Kinman for vintage sounds - even when his pu's are labelled as modern sounding.

I've not appreciated at all EMG's and DiMarzio Area's. YMMV.

Re: Best Hum Cancelling Single Coil Sized Bridge Pickup(Specific Enough?)

I like my EMGs but frankly they have absolutely nothing to do with normal guitar pickups. It's a completely different type of sound; I'm not surprised they're so divisive.

One thing I don't like, though, is when people call them "sterile". They're not sterile if you're not. You get out what you put in, and nothing more. Most pickups add a bit of their own "voice" to your playing. EMGs are completely transparent, like a hi-fi.

I wonder, if in eight years, he finally made a decision? :D
