The stock JB was the best sounding of the lot. It had the most crisp attack and most defined tone... the others were various amounts of looseness.
The A8 was the worst sounding to my ears.

It's hard to argue with that assessment based on those clips, but it is worth noting that the HD500 patch I was playing through was painstakingly designed around the JB. Through my Jet City, I recall the JB being the loosest. And through the amp, the A8 is kind of cool. It has a BIG mid push, but it's smooth and thick and my amp EQ could probably be tweaked to make the pickup sound pretty useful. I'm actually thinking about swapping out the A8 for a ceramic, which would scoop out some of the mids and further tighten up the lows, right?

I just heard a reduced attack in all of the hybrid clips... but... there were interesting things going on enough to warrant them useful depending on what you are looking for.
I'm obsessed with attack but it's not the be all end all. You definitely had more girth going on with the hybrids and some people would trade attack for girth.
My opinion is just my opinion, I am a weirdo and don't dig any metal guitar tones after Tool's Undertow album. lolz!
I'm one of those guys who liked Adam Jones' more crusty and smaller sound before he went Diezel, Bogner and all of that high gain crap.
Give me the Super Bass and that probably puts me in the minority. Im a 42 year old crusty old man.

is the HD500 running with a compressor or a limiter in the chain?
Anyway, every digital simulator tends to level down everything to my ears.
(btw, I've never been able to hear the real sound and vibe of a pickup from a soundclip, even if they have been made with microphone and amp only, pickups response is something you hear not only with your ears but mostly with your fingertips, imho)

I love the Custom coil along with a JB coil. With any magnet, it's a winner:
Alnico 2: brown and grungy
Alnico 3: cleaner and clearer
Alnico 4: flag
Alnico 5: really bright and clean
Alnico 8: fat, ballsy, and musculer
Ceramic: Fantastic! Cleans are a little nasally, but the mids sing, bass is tight, and highs cut through.

I've got a ceramic on the way from Addiction FX. I'm really looking forward to trying that one. I'm still using it with the A8 right now, and i think the ceramic will fix some of my complaints about that magnet--primarily that it's too mid-heavy and loose.
Did you find you had a preference as far as which coil used the slug and which used the screw?

Just posting a few more clips because, well, why the hell not? I dropped the compressor from the HD500's signal chain and tweaked a few setting to compensate, but the patch should be fairly similar to the one I'd used previously. I did, however, build this patch around the FS screw coil, JB slug coil, with an A8 magnet, rather than the JB as the last one had been. I then kept everything the same and swapped in an A5 and a ceramic mag. I've tried to keep the pickup height about the same for all these recordings as well, but I haven't taken any thorough measurements or anything, so no guarantees.
