Best Ibanez to buy

Hi Guys,

I am in the mood to graduate to a real superstrat.

Ofcourse I want a Jackson SL2H, SL1 or SL2, BUT, it's just too much $$$. I think i can find what I am looking for in a top of the line Ibanez instead.

So I am looking at a 1570-SDB (black color).
I'm reading great things about it so far (except for pickups - which will most likely be swapped out anyway if the guitar itself rocks...)

A guy is selling it in Toronto for $860 Canadian.

What other similar Ibanezes would you recommend?

I need a Original Floyd or Edge Pro type bridge, because I wanna dive like crazy and stay in tune. What do you think about the Edge Zero? I was looking at S-series too (s5470) - but i'm kind of skeptical about the body being so thin on the sides.

How about the RG3570Z? http://www.ibanez.com/ElectricGuitars/model-RG3570Z

All of these top end guitars should rock, I am presuming...

(I want Low low action, and great tone for lead. I don't play much metal. I just wanna sound like all the prog rockers, Satch, Vai, Timmons, Lukather, etc... Smooth lead tone - great playability is what i'm after. Also it has to be made in atleast Japan. I was looking at the Joe Satriani JS 1000 and the Steve Vai model, both of which are awesome guitar, but I want something more generic - so I can create my own sound in a way. Plus the JEM is very expensive too. )

Ok thanks guys,
Alex

Re: Best Ibanez to buy

I have a japanese made Ibanez S2120 and it is amazing. Thin body is really nice and its really thick where the pickups and tremolo are so there are no issues there. Mine sounds absolutely huge.

I have never tried the edge zero but Ibanez makes some really nice bridges.

IMO any japan made Ibanez is the way to go.

Re: Best Ibanez to buy

Why not go for a Jackson SL-4, SL-3, or dinky, on the used market? Japanese made.

If you go Ibanez, just get one that isnt basswood. They sound like ass IMO. I hate freakin basswood.

This is a good deal,

http://cgi.ebay.com/Jackson-SL3-Sol...ryZ33044QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It has a licensed floyd but, I have swapped back and fourth between that and a OFR with no difference in stability. The tone is a hair different but, neither are bad.

IMO, licensed floyds have the same tuning stability as a OFR. Dont let anyone fool you. A OFR holds up better over time and has a bit warmer tone than a licensed unit though.

BTW, this model has a floating trem. Ever had expereince with those? They can be a pain in the ass to keep in tune, dosent matter what type of trem is on it or not. It can be easily blocked or stabilized by aftermarket products.

Re: Best Ibanez to buy

If you need new, see if you can find one of the RG770DX reissues. Original Wizard neck profile and Original Edge. A pair that is tough to beat.

If used is ok, get your hands on an older RG5xx or 7xx guitar.

I have an RG760 for sale if interested.

Hmmm.. But mr. Satriani can't be wrong, can he? Noooo he can't.

Thing is - I'm pretty sure i'm not gonna Ebay anything at this point - the dollar conversion rate is 76 cents US right now. Customs and shipping will murder me too... So 550 for a used jackson will turn into around 900 Canadian after everything. Not worth it.

Guys I'm getting the RG2570 tonight (silver) for 700... Gonna test drive it tonight, and report back when i bring it home.

Re: Best Ibanez to buy

I would go for a prestige Ibanez over an import SL-3 or SL-4.

I've played one of those RG2570s recently (it was a yellow one) and it was really nice, good choice.

Re: Best Ibanez to buy

A top tip, is to avoid any of the modern day S Series guitars, except perhaps the S 7320 which is pretty good.
Even though Ibanez tells you that the specs of the RG Wizard II and S Series neck are the same, in reality the S series with Wizard II necks have this irritating, chunky profile to them which doesn't feel right IMO.
The S 5470 is full of bad design decisions unfortunately. I spent ages hoping that the 24 fret S would kick major ass, but Ibanez failed by putting a smaller trem sustain block on there, and a lot of the 5470 guitars have serious sustain issues because of their poor design.
Stick with the RG series in terms of new guitars, because they are the best ones Ibanez have to offer right now.

If you like super thin necks, Ibanez recently reintroduced the Super Wizard neck for '09.
If not quite that thin, go for one of the other Ibanez Prestige RGs with normal Wizard I neck.
If you want an 1570 like you said in your original post, go for it, because they are great players and well built.
Chuck some Dimarzio Evo IIs in there if you're serious about getting that instrumental rock tone.
For Seymour Duncan, go for Full Shreds, because they are one of the best SDs for basswood.

Re: Best Ibanez to buy

Dont worry about the body being thin in the sides in the S series it is thick enough in the middle where the bridge and the pickups are mounted.
For a long time I just did not like Ibanez.. I just hated all there Basswood guitars and the RGs. That was until I tried a S series. Give it a try you may like it.

Re: Best Ibanez to buy

So I took the RG2570 home yesterday. I really love it.
It plays so smooth (really reminds me of a time I tried an SL2H in the store once). The open chords sound so clear and in tune, and the neck feels wide but super fast at the same time (it's very thin though). The trem is very smooth. So yeah, I'm a happy camper now - i finally got me a decent superstrat. Gonna pawn off some cheapos now....
