Best J pickup to accompany MM?

Hey, just looking for some opinions. Im getting a walnut jazz from Warmoth and i want a J+MM pickup configuration. Im pretty much decided on getting the SMB-4d for the bridge, and im looking at getting an Aguilar OBP-3 onboard preamp, which i want to wire with an active/passive switch. I was wondering which J pickup would best compliment this set up for the neck? Ive been looking mainly at the SJB-2's, STK-J2's and the Quarter Pounder's. Im in a hard rock band, but i play quite a lot of different styles, so versatility is a plus. Other suggestions and comments with regards to wiring ideas etc would also be welcome. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers :)

Re: Best J pickup to accompany MM?

In my opinion, the MM/J pairing only makes sense if your circuitry permits coil splitting of the MM pickup.

If you are not interested in achieving traditional Jazz Bass style sounds, the J pickup might as well be a stacked-coil, noise-cancelling type. e.g. The STK-J1n

Re: Best J pickup to accompany MM?

If it was me doing it, I would put in a dual in-line coil (split coil) J pickup. A lot of companies make them*. Unfortunately, SD isn't one of them.

*If you want a recommendation, I have Fender Super 55 pickups on my three-pickup Jazz, and they sound fantastic. Other companies include

Aguilar
Bartolini
Delano
DiMarzio
Nordstrand

and probably others I can't think of right now.

Re: Best J pickup to accompany MM?

why not a second MM? with a 3 way split / series / parallel switch it would sound pretty much like a jazz, but also give you more balls wen you need them without being as bright as the bridge MM if you want a more rock-typed tone.

BTW, I have a SMD-4D on the bridge, and I love how it sounds (and a SMD-4A on the neck :D )

I'd love to see a picture of that. I'm contemplating doing the same thing.
