Re: Best Mashall Amp

My guitarist has a Marshall 2203. Invader + DS1 + 2203 = the most incredible sound I have ever heard.

1959 Plexi
I love the sound of that amp, cranked, with a great player. Strats and Les Pauls both sound great.
I bought a 1987x RI because 50w is plenty of power for me. I use an attenuator with it also. I have had a 2203 and a 2204 also - very nice Marshall tones, but the Plexi is definitely my favorite.

BTW...a JTM45 was 45 watts...not 30
a 1959 Plexi head is not 100 watts, it's about 70
and a 1987 50 watt is not 50 watts is really 37

Remember this...YOU CAN NOT HEAR A WATT!!!

I've always believed a JTM45 was about 28w, not 45w.

A 50w Marshall to be about 97w onset of clipping and a 100w Marshall to be 187w onset of clipping.

I may be wrong, but this is what I remember reading somewhere :)

I voted for JTM45, 50w Plexi, JCM800 and DSL 50 :D

Re: Best Mashall Amp

I'd opt for a 1987XL 50w plexi head. SWEET amp and just right for me... not as honky as the 100w amps.

Re: Best Mashall Amp

Lew, I've played through two different 18 watt Marshall clones. One was built by Graydon Stuckey put of Flint (GDS amps I believe) at the detroit guitar show a couple of years ago and the other was built by one of the guys at the LPF (one of the Daves I believe) and was owned by Terry over at RIT Music in Ann Arbor.

Both were killer sounding amps.

On a side note one of out members, Lastwinj has designed and is building an open ended ultra linear combo that is to die for as well. It has killer cleans, very nice pushed tones and what seems to me gain that goes over the top of the Mark I Boogies if you want it. I ran the chassis through one of my Mesa 3/4 back cabs here at the house and it sounded very simular to my Mark I channels on the Triaxis/2:90 rack with more range available in the gain stage. It will be a killer amp for pick up and go work.

I'm with Stevo on this one. I also own a 1987X Plexi RI (use an attenuator too) and am extremely happy with. My final decision came down to either this one or a JCM 800, but for my low gain taste and love of power amp distortion, this was the right choice and it just plain sounded better, cleaner and more authentic than the 800 (which was still good, but not the holy grail IMO). True, there is only one channel, but if you want pure tone this is the real thing and turning your volume knob up and down does give you two channels (or switch pups) - and if you want more gain for a song, just turn up your volume (amp volume pretty much turns into gain control once you pass 2 on the dial). This is also a very good live set up: plug in and play! And as Angus once said, the more gadgets you have to contend with, the more likely something's going to go wrong.

What? No Jubilee????

+1... Also, I like the JCM800 2210's. Haven't played enough 900's to know much about them, only that I've been told to steer clear of them.

Re: Best Mashall Amp

Bluesbreaker...

Anything else with a Marshall logo is just making noise.

Re: Best Mashall Amp

I voted for the 2245 and 1987. I prefer lower wattage amps. Easier to push into nice nice subtle overdrive.. and I'm now a fan of drive pedals so!

I think those amps are the greatest starting point to achieve great tone. No need for those add. gain stage, onboard fx and such. I'm a purist. :D

Re: Best Mashall Amp

Interesting that I see no Silver Jubilee

So I just had to vote for the MG ... :D:D:D ... sort of like a Sympathy vote

Re: Best Mashall Amp

I like the older Plexi a lot, but I don't know if it can beat my JCM800 2210 100W, so I guess the 2210 is my favorite right now. I like having two channels, and the clean is unlike any Marshall I've ever heard before. Very pure and responsive. The 30th Anniversary head or the 2555/2553 head are also very cool, but I feel more comfortable with the 2210 I guess

Re: Best Mashall Amp

So many Marshalls are geared for different styles of music, so it's hard to say "one's best."

For singing highgain lead channels, I'd choose Jubilees(silver), 1992 30th Ann (blue),
and DSL's.

For heavy crunch: JCM 800 single channel models w/verticle inputs 2203 & 2204.
early 70's metalfront JMP's.

For punk and garage rock: 75-80 MkII Mastervolumes (tolex front with corner caps and large white piping.

For Blues, Classic Rock, and the best Marshall tones w/single coils. All the JTM's, Plexis, and JMP's from 64-72. They stopped making Point to Point amps in the middle of 73, so early 73's are P to P, and later 73's started using the large tracer circuit boards, which still sounded real good. They started using small tracer boards and board mounted jacks around 85, which is when Marshall tone began dwindling IMO.

Actually, the wattage values that I posted are the correct Marshall Specification values.... Check Marshall's web site and you'll see that I am correct.

Re: Best Mashall Amp

I always thought that an older "50W Marshall" started clipping at the 50 watt mark and that the actual potential wattage was much higher.. like th other way around from what Brow said.

I read an article written by Ritchie Fliegler that kind of described Marshall's search for the best two Plexis ever so they could model the reissues on that. One of them ended up belonging to Warren DeMartini and the other to Angela Amps in NY. Warren's "100W" plexi topped out at 197 when it was cranked.

I read the info from my post from a Marshall catalogue. But if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I don't mind :)

Chuck, besides a Fair Play Award you must be a Static-X or Rob Zombie fan, then ;)

I picked the JCM800, but I still prefer the 900 SL-X and the creme of the crop Silver Jubilee.

Re: Best Mashall Amp

While these are all reissues listed, I'd choose the Marshall Super Lead as my favorite all time Marshall. It's a plexi with more balls and it's simply amazing.

I was surprised as well that there was no JMP mentioned. My friend used to own a JMP Mk II and it was his favorite.
