hello everyone

I'm a guitar player who basically knows squad about basses...

Can anyone recommend a comfortable&cool shape/brand with active pups?

Re: Best metal bass?

i dont know about active pups, but it seems that in the metal world, you can get away with old school stuff without as much scrutiny. p/j basses are always a sure bet

id say a nice thunderbird or iceman bass though

Re: Best metal bass?

Thanks for the input :yourock:

Well I was thinking more of a bass for black metal, so Gibson or Ibanez would not be my first choices, I think.
I got my eye on a Dean Dimebag Razorback and fell in love with the looks, but I will favor comfort before anytime and this bass seems to have some soapbar pups that appear to be passive (please correct me if I'm wrong) -- btw what is the deal with all those different kinds of bass pups??? :eek5: I really don't understand the difference between the different pup sizes (on 4-string basses)

I am now torn between an ESP LTD F-154DX and a Schecter Damien
Any advice with these or other basses I really would appreciate a lot

.

Re: Best metal bass?

Any bass will do..
Just depends on what sound you're looking for..

Active is generally more expensive..
You can get away with a hollow body, with flat wounds on it if you wanted to..

It just depends on what YOU want.
It's your sound. Don't go asking people to give it to you.

Find it.

Re: Best metal bass?

My vote would go to a Derek Smalls signature model only I don't think that anybody makes one. Big bottom! ;o)

BC Rich Warlock. It's pointy. It's a classic shape in it's own right. And, you can actually sit down with it if necessary.

And you don't get much more black metal than ICS Vortex:

Fender J-Bass 5 strings are very nice. Most 5-string basses can get you far. If it's all goth metal looking, than score. If it's a Fenderbass, then people will know you're not just some punk playing metal all the time but a classy player with more diverse tastes, because to me a Jazz Bass says "I play a buncha different kinds of music".

Re: Best metal bass?

To me the ultimate Metal bass is a Rickenbaker. Just look at Lemmie Kilmeister and Cliff Burton.

Like others have said, there's alot of metal players that play Fender style basses.

Re: Best metal bass?

For bass, it seem like what you do with your hands is most important. Of course, different people have their preferences for metal-looking instruments, in which case Schecter and LTD/ESP make some interesting choices.

Re: Best metal bass?

The reason I picked the T-40 is cause it's not about the looks...although it does come in black with chrome pickup rings and parts, but cause it has a 35 inch scale and positively brings the THUNDER.

Re: Best metal bass?

Personally I recommend the Ibanez Soundgear range. Top notch basses with active electronics for not big bucks.
Necks are very slim and fast for wizzing around. Pity they don't come in more funky colours.
Mina thing, as with any instrument, is to get something that feels comfortable.
If you're going to be playing fast bass lines there's no point getting something you can barely get ya hands round as it'll be cramping up before the end of the first song.

In the SoundGear series, there are so many to choose from, with different designs, finishes, pickups, woods, EQs, strings, and prices. I like my SR405 a lot.
