I like Alex Skolnick's (ex Testament) tone.. specially on Souls of Black and Practice what you preach.

Metallica have a good tone too.

Rhythm tone... Megadeth Countdown to Extinction Tone. Nice and thick and it cut through nicely. Ive only got that and Rust in Peace. Countdown seemed to have a bit more bass in its tone, but was still nicely tight.

Lead... Zakk, or alex skolnick in testament (different but i like them both). Dime's tone in cemetary gates was nice aswell. Slash my fave tone of all, for hard rock.

tallica and teles.. the unforgiven2 and ronnie on laod.. prolly a lot more on the load album also

best tone? i like EdGuy's tone.. and the one that the guys got together in avantasia - the metal opera. i never considered tallica or deth tone as THAT good (well, dont jump on me with deth cos i really havent heard that much) but tallica never had that really uber kind of tone (except maybe on master of puppets lol)

i like emppu's tone on the nightwish records, did i mention edguy on mandrake?
maiden always had a pretty distinctive sound and i like them all, from iron maiden to dance of death. they have diferent eras, but they're all good IMO.. but their BEST sound would probably be brave new world (as my GF would agree to also hehe)

I completely agree about Edguy and Nightwish.
I also like Iron Savior tone on "Condition Red"-PAFlike fire!
Megadeth-Cutting
Whitesnake-Sweet and very clear
George Lynch-True 80's
and Rammstein (especially on the first two albums)-HiTech.

Sevendust , may not be the heaviest band in the world.
But some of those songs guitar parts are and they have tone to match in spades.

Kudos to both Russ and Grandor ...

JC is probably one of the most forgotten guitarists in Metal ...

And I am a Sevendust fan , although I feel guilty for liking them.


But my top 5?

1.) Toni Iommi with the John Birch equipped SG, the pickups on that one are to my ears lower output and much more nasal than his new Gibby pups ... and damnit I just like that slashing tone.

2.) Dave Murray and Adrian Smith on POM and Powerslave

3.) Not metal ... but Jerry Cantrell had wicked tone in my books

4.) Zakk ... it's chicken picken good

5.) Add a little bass to Seasons in the Abyss Slayer ... and I'm loving it

Most over-rated?

Dime and Scott Rosenfeld ... however their riffs and songs make up for it 500%

i love randy rhoads tone on crazy train
but steve vai's tone on "in the still of the night" by whitesnake is just perfect tone in my opinion. and symphony x's tone.
and of course, angus young!

give me Metallica's AJFA tone... some of the sweetest cleans and distortion ever! Also, not really metal, but default, the guitarist's got great tone. And let's not forget Dime's legendary Pantera tone, and Zakk Wylde. Gotta love pinch harmonics! *rocks out* One thing about Kirk Hammett and Metallica now though... Kirk wouldn't know TONE if it came up behind him in a well lit room and sodomized him 12 times over! :laugh2:

Slayer: Great cranked Marshall tone with lots of mids.

Motorhead: Same as above but more "vintage"

Iron Maiden: Piece of Mind has their best tone IMHO

Worst:

Dimebag DIAMOND Darrel: Hurts my ears, great argument against solid state amps.

ALL Metallica: No mids = NO TONE

All the trendy mallcore/Nu-Metal bands , doesn't matter which one, they all have a serious lack of tone.

I don't exactly think that's the case...

I think it'd be SUPER easy to go back to his ol' trusty equipment on Puppets and shit and get that famous tone again, but I think he knows Metallica is a legend, why not try something new? Gotta keep it fun, I suppose... even if new tone means garbage... :smack: Ah well... I got over it, I'd have thought, but look at me now. AH! :yell:
