Re: best metal tone

from the list, it will be a tie between wylde and petrucci. but my favorite is hetfield's tone on sad but true.

Re: best metal tone

i know i missed out on some metal greats...
also, i put kirk hammett there as a joke, his tone really sucks

Kirk Hammett shouldn't even be on that list, IMO. Wicked, earpiercing trebly tone with too much crappy wah slain all over.

I'd say Petrucci for lead tones, and Zakk or Alexi for rhythm, depending on if you want chunk or more of a thrashmetal tone.

+1 AMEN TO THAT.....HAMMETT NEEDS TO GO TO METAL/SHRED GUITAR
TONE UNIVERSITY (AKA TALK TO DEADSKINSLAYER, JOLLY , AND NUNTIUS.)
AND PETRUCCI HAS GREAT TONES ALTHOUGH SOMETIMES OVER PROCESSED.
AND ALEXI HAS GREAT RHYTHM TONES. ANOTHER GOOD RHYTHM TONE I
LIKE IS THE GUITARISTS FROM KUTLESS.

Re: best metal tone

And where's Dave Murray or Adrian Smith? tsk tsk...

Kirk Hammett doesn't even have tone. His EMGs just make loud beeping noises when he solos :P

I haven't really listened to the artists mentioned (never heard petrucci except that he's good) and for when I've heard them it's been through cheapo headphones so it's not like I could pinpoint the tone, but I would say hammet's tone is horrific.

Favourite to less-favourite

Living Sacrifice (new stuff) ESP SC7
As I Lay Dying (new album) Washburn LP-copy
Sinai Beach

Haha, all metalcore bands...but absolutely crushing tone, the kind that snaps your head back when you play a note, haha.

80's metal tone: X Japan (BC Rich...), it's just fun :D

Re: best metal tone

Out of those artists I would probably go with zack but i love the guitar tone on Enter Sandman and Unforgiven (but I reckon hetfeilds tone is better then hammets in my opinion) but only on that album their earlier tone sux and i haven't heard much of their newer stuff.

P.S I am not really into overly scooped tones but i don't mind recto tones

Re: best metal tone

ok love is an overstatement
but it isn't that bad (I have heard worse try anything through a digitech death metal)

I love Petrucci's tone but it has gotten far too 'rectifier' in the past few years. I would have voted for him but Alexi's tone just slays all around. Also I much prefer Zakk's tone with Ozzy than with BLS, it just turns to slushy **** with them.

What can i say different sets of ears, i personally love the rectifier sound with the right guitar and pick ups. As well as being one of my all time fave guitarists of all those i think petrucci has the best tone. satriani should be in the running too. :laugh2:

Re: best metal tone

I always loved the tone of Hank Sherman and Michael Denner from Mercyful Fate. Now thats what i call a great Metal tone!!!!

Re: best metal tone

I'd say Petrucci. Mark IV tone a la "Awake" just slays everything around.

Especially with 7 strings. His lead tone on that album is absolutely incredible too.

Peace!

Re: best metal tone

As soon as Petrucci started recording with Rectos his tone started dissagreeing with my ears. Anything that has the Mark vibe to it just slays, but for example Train of Thought, makes me want to puke if it's on for too long.

Re: best metal tone

i really like metallica's tone on the black album , also lamb of god on ashes of the wake has killer tone , i heard that both used the same amp in those albums (mesa) can someone tell me the exact amp model???????

Re: best metal tone

Lamb of God use Mesa Boogie Mark 4's, and I'm not all that sure about Metallica's tone on the black album, it would be an assortment of Mesa equipment. Triaxeses, Mark series, maybe even a couple rectumfriers.

Re: best metal tone

Of those listed, Dime follewed by Zakk followed by Alexi...

Note: for "tone" I chose the "fingerless definition", just the pure timbre of the way the instrument sounds ;)
