really like Metallica's rhythm tone on Ride the Lightning though.

Agreed. I loved that rhythm. Only spoiled when Hammett started his solos. Great playing, awful sound. He doesn't need tone university, he needs tone kindergarten :P

Some of the rhythm on Master of Puppets was good too. Seemed a bit thicker, a little less fuzzy to me. I prefer Ride the Lighting, myself. And Justice for All could have been good, except it sounds like they mixed it with something picked up at a back alley garage sale.

Re: best metal tone

Lahio's lead tone on Hatebreeder is a favorite of mine, ditto with Stephan Forté from Adagio...
Favorite Rhythm tone... DECAPITATED... Vogg's is crushing...

Enough said

also, rraarrww isnt that good at guitar, IMO

HAHAHAHAHAH STFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!

jacksonknox27 sucks too, btw, even though he claims to have taught Petrucci how to do pinch harmonics that can be heard on Octavarium.

hahaha

Re: best metal tone

Kurt Ballou from Converge has the tone i want...Rickenbacker with an EMG81 into an old Marshall and an old Ampeg...most noticably "Towing Jehovah" or um "When Forever Comes Crashing Down".

from those guys on the list i'd chose alexi but there are so many gret tones around in the metal scene: john schaffer(iced earth),the amott brothers(arch enemy) or Jari Mäenpää (Wintersun)

+1

i love jon schaffer's tone, hence my username :)

Re: best metal tone

the tone on all these guys is unbeleivable, especially petrucci's lead sound, but if your talking "metal" as the poll asks... Dimebag... he is metal tone... it has everything you will ever need from the low chuggs, to his screaming high... it is pure metal tone

Re: best metal tone

inflames or kreator for me, its the classic modern metal sound done well IMO :burnout:

and as for hammet.. ugh. before he started on 81/81, fine. after, hell no. i can't stand how the guy sounds now...

Re: best metal tone

I voted for Zakk out of that bunch following would be Dime then Alexi.

My all time faves are

Bill Steer
Jeff Loomis
Pepper Keenan
Scott Ian
Alex Scholnick

Damn......Im missing someone...!

Re: best metal tone

I voted for Zakk, just for his Pride & Glory album. It's more southern rock than metal, but I seriously dig the hell out of it!

Re: best metal tone

In best John Petrucci-board fashion: Opeth!

But out of the ones there, I'd have to pick mid-90's John Petrucci or Alexi Laiho.

Yeah Petrucci's lead sound is very awesome metal tone. So... silky smooth...
Go the Mark and Recto series'!

I prefer Petrucci's chugging sound (refer to 'lie' and 'the mirror' for samples). I don't think Dime ever got that bassy heart thumping chug.
Although his is great. A different approach though.
Dime has heaps of highs in his sound, Petrucci's are a bit more tamed.

They both work for what they do. I mean listen to dime's awesome screaming highs on Cemetary Gates...

I had to vote Petrucci however. \m/

I really hate the tone they had when they switched to Mesa Boogies. Especially justice - the mids are scooped way too much, just makes it sound like poo.
I love the tone they had with the Marshalls on RTL though.

Out of the choices I'd go for Alexi Laiho
