Re: best metal tone

Opeths tone is killer, but out of those ALEXI that is in fact why i am COB...

Also LOG they are just amazing both of them...

Also MR. LOOMIS's tone on enemies of reality with that 7 string... mmmmm good

Re: best metal tone

Well, stuff this list :P

At the moment, my favourite tone is "Tourniquet - Where Moth and Rust Destroy". The rhythm is mean, and Marty Friedman's soloing tone is awesome.

Re: best metal tone

Me, I appreciate some well-written licks and good-sounding lines rather than the tone itself. I appreciate tone, especially old-school blues/jazz and old-school rock, but that's more preference to me, I guess. There's some stuff from The Cranberries, for example, that has a great sound, but isn't played through distortion. *shrug* But anyways, me, I prefer the Metallica music, so I like their sound, but I'd never use their setup :)

Re: best metal tone

I liked Petrucci's tones quite a bit. I remember reading somewhere that Awake was 4 guitar tracks for most rythyms. Two tracks right and two tracks left, each side was one track of a Recto and one track of a Mark IIC+. That Mark IIC+ was a monster in metal recordings, I think Puppets was done with that amp and so was Justice, aside from the early Dream Theater.

Re: best metal tone

Kurt Ballou from Converge. Listen to "Towing Jehovah" as loud as you can and you'll see what I mean.

Re: best metal tone

I like the underrated twin guitar attack of CoC's Woody Weatherman and Pepper Keenan.

Woody handles the Iommian lead/rythm tones, while Pepper supplies both brooding rythm tones (while he sings), and the supercharged solo tones when all hell breaks sonically-loose.

Either one is my favorite "metal" tone.

From these artists, Dimebag Darrell, but the real answer that comes to mind when I read that question is: Randy Rhoads!

Rock On - Kac

Kac speaks the truth.

Re: best metal tone

I can't vote...I don't care for any of them honestly, Petrucci and Dimebag, IMO have some of the most horrid tones ever (IMO of course). But If I had to I'd go with Zakk on the first album he did with Ozzy..after that it got pretty bad/overprocessed.

For really "heavy" metal tones, I'd go with MOP era Hetfield, early megadeath Mustaine, and take a listen to a song called "badlands" by Metal Church.

Re: best metal tone

I love alot of Tony Iommi's tones in Black Sabbath, I think he set the standard for many heavy metal guitarists for years.

Re: best metal tone

You know i really never thought much of hammets tone or his playing. I mean its not as if he is unskilled but i just was not really impressed with his phrasing and note selection.

my favorite metal players are in no particular order.
John Petrucci.

Yngwie Malmsteen.

Joe satriani.

Vinnie moore.

Eric Johnson (though he isn't really metal)

Re: best metal tone

i just saw children of bodom last night and alexi's tone was awesome. his tone was very clear and very middy. great guitar player! cant wait to see them again!

rock on! \m/

Re: best metal tone

I voted for Zakk but that's only because I really don't care for most of these player's tones. Not that they sound bad or anything but I've heard better.
My favorite metal tone belongs to:

Dino Cazares/ ex-Fear factory. Especially on the " Obsolete " album

Re: best metal tone

Zakk. I saw him play live with Ozzy and his tone was awesome, sounded better than the original recordings. Check out Ozzy Live at the Budokan to see what I mean. Him and Dimebag are tied.

Metallica's recent live tone SUCKS. All thin, icepicky and trebly, no bass at all. The are a horrible live band now, since Hetfield went sober. The tone you hear on the Black Album, especially Sad But True, is the result of overdubs, tripling and thickening the tone through recording.

Re: best metal tone

Well, I would go with Zakk and Dime tied on this selection of names... BUT I have to say that people should pay attention to George Lynch and John Sykes... they are way into their own world when it comes to tone and that is really cool. Just like the two above mentioned. As for Hammet, he is a joke IMO. I don't like one single solo of his. And his tone sucks too as does his vibrato. Hey Kirk! Nothing personal... opinions are just opinions anyway...

+1 too that. I like very much Lynch's tone and specifically in "just got lucky". Very crisp PAFish one.
