Best modeler to plug directly into PA

Re: Best modeler to plug directly into PA

I really prefere the Vox Tonelab series over all of the others.

Re: Best modeler to plug directly into PA

I just picked up a POD xt Live today. I couldn't really try out in the store so I got 15 months no payments and I am going to check it out. I may look into the tonelab...how are its heavy distortions?

Any words of wisdom from POD xt Live owners?

Re: Best modeler to plug directly into PA

For heavy stuff, the stock models are pretty good - especially the Spinal Puppet(Mesa-like) and Modern Hi-Gain(Soldano X88R). The Jazz Clean(JC120) model is my choice for clean stuff.

I spent the extra $50 and got the Metal Shop pack. The stuff in there is really useful; the Big Bottom(triple rec with a sub cab) and Criminal(5150) models are very popular, as is the Bomber Uber(Bogner Uberschall). This also nets you three more high-gain Marshall models, if that's the flavor you prefer.

The "Boost+EQ" stomp is worth playing with. I use it for boosting my dirty patches and sending my cleans into mild to moderately crunchy territory; switching up your EQ without changing patches can be really helpful in some situations - there's a momentary silence when you change patches, but not when you switch an effect on or off.

It's worth getting comfortable with both Gearbox and Line6 Edit, though Edit offers a few important things that Gearbox doesn't, namely the ability to assign your expression pedal to tweak one effect's parameters, which is usually set to work with the Bender stomp, and to set the "amp" button to turn the compressor on and off, rather than toggle the amp on/off.

Also, I strongly recommend running the Pod through studio monitors, good headphones, a PA, or home stereo. PC speakers are not your friend, and guitar amps will probably do things you don't like to the sound, assuming you'd like your home/practice sound to be as close as possible to what you're putting through the PA. Also, remember to compensate for the infamous Fletcher-Munson effect when building patches for live use - you're probably going to need to boost your mids a little for gigs.

...that was a fair bit of babble. Is there anything in particular you'd like pointers on?

Re: Best modeler to plug directly into PA

Thanks for the info, I have only played with the presets. I have been running it thru Samson Resolv 40a monitors and the sounds are good.

You may have covered it, but what do i do to have a volume boost for solos (don't necessarily need gain)? Something like the Seymour Duncan pickup booster.

Also, do you think the metal shop bundle is worth it?

Oh and like I said I run these thru monitors at school and home and will be running thru a PA at practice. I am ready to replace my rig...lets see if the POD xt live will be the one that does it.

Re: Best modeler to plug directly into PA

I've got an old Johnson J-Station and though I hate the guitar amps models, the bass models sound killer. I actually played a few shows using the SVT setting and it sounded great!

Sounds like your rig is about ideal for running a modeler direct.

For solo boosts, if you just need to boost volume and nothing else, the trick lots of people use is to use Line6 Edit to set the Amp button to toggle the compressor on/off, setting it not to compress anything but to add 6 dB or so. The comp runs post, so there won't be any additional dirt.

The metal shop bundle is very much worth it, IMO, but if you're not impressed enough to drop $50, Line6 lets you "return" the bundle within 30 days.

Re: Best modeler to plug directly into PA

I haven't got to try out the PODxt live on a PA yet. Should I wait for the Tonelab LE to come out and try it before I decide to keep the POD? Would any one recommed it?
