Re: Best Modern Amp for Metal and Rock?

Boy, that is a short list of amps! I don't think the ENGL is in the ball park, and I have had a very bad experience with Bogner. The Diezel is $$$$$, and I admit to no having heard the Krank yet.

Personally, I think Mesa's Dual and Triple Rectifiers have changed the world of guitar amplification; and I think the Stiletto is really going to push Marshall, hard.

Speaking of Marshall, don't they build a pretty decent amp in the TSL 100 or DSL 100???

(And no Soldano? No Rivera Knucklehead? No VHT????)

Well, your poll--but put me in the "OTHER" category--I vote Rectifier.

Re: Best Modern Amp for Metal and Rock?

well...I tried a Bogner Uberschall once and I have to admit I was blown away...killer amp. As for the Diezel VH4 I've tried one twice now and I liked it a lot better the 2nd time but it costs some major cheese and to be honest there are things about it I didn't care for. I have never tried an Engl Powerball so I won't coment on that at all. I have tried a Krankenstein and was very unimpressed I also tried a chadwick and was also unimpressed with it. All that said, If I were gonna go buy a high amp today I would get a VHT Pitbull Ultra Lead...I really do like those amps a lot!

Re: Best Modern Amp for Metal and Rock?

if I had to choose an amp you have in the poll it would be a tought call between the Bogner and the Deizel...but at the end I think I might go for the Bogner.

Re: Best Modern Amp for Metal and Rock?

VHT.

And the new Stiletto's should def give some of the "boutique" guys a run for their money. Glad to see they tweaked 'em a bit.

Of those choices, I'd prolly go Bogner.

Re: Best Modern Amp for Metal and Rock?

If I had to choose from those amps, I'd go with the Bogner.

Re: Best Modern Amp for Metal and Rock?

You already know what I'm gonna say. Forget the Uberschall, get the Ecstasy.

It'll do glassy EL-34 clean all the way to brutal and toneful metal meltdown, plus every single shade of Marshall in between. It's like EL-34 modeling clay, and it's Reinhold Bogner's brainchild......his claim to fame. The Uber is just a dumb downed version made specifically for metal. The Ecstasy is whatever you want it to be. It would be appropriate for anyone from a Duane Allman fan all the way to a Nu Metal fan.......only the settings would be different.

I think most people have no idea how much gain you get get out of an Ecstasy GJ! You need to post some red-channel clips. I don't think Krank belongs on this list in any way, shape or form. I don't think there is a single part on a Krank that Reinhold Bogner or Peter Diezel would use in a temporary loaner amp. If you were playing straight metal I'd probably go with a Herbert over the VH4. Save $150 and get three channels over four.

Re: Best Modern Amp for Metal and Rock?

RGN, you're one of those few lucky guys that have both the Ecstasy and Diezel VH4. I remember your short review of both, but it's gotta be a fun day to stand in front of those two and hear the best EL-34 and 6L6 channel switching amps!!

Re: Best Modern Amp for Metal and Rock?

I prefer the Powerball over any of those. I've played 3 different Uber's and didn't like any of them.

Re: Best Modern Amp for Metal and Rock?

Hmmm...

Bogner Uberschall - No doubt a killer amp, but I really think you can do better, especially for the price.

Diezel VH4 - Overrated, IMO. I don't dig how these are voiced at all.

ENGL Powerball - Pretty killer amp, great for Meshuggah type stuff. Chug and grind, for sure. I don't like it as much for fast riffing, I find the voicing is much too overly saturated for that.

Krankenstein - Meh... Revolution 1's sound better, IMO, and are great when mixed with an amp that can fill out the low end and low mids - like a Mesa on Nevermore's This Godless Endeavour ;).

Re: Best Modern Amp for Metal and Rock?

well i own a powerball but if you let me pick any amp....all i need is a diezel herbert. too bad i refuse to spend that much on an amp. i like my powerball but part of me wants to get a good old mesa dual recto.

Re: Best Modern Amp for Metal and Rock?

GJ- just for the record, my VH4 has TAD EL34s in it. I am going to probably go to KT88s when the power tubes go.

Re: Best Modern Amp for Metal and Rock?

Out of thoes, I'd take the Krank. I'd rather have a Dual/Triple Recto and/or mesa F 50/100

Re: Best Modern Amp for Metal and Rock?

The vh4 and bogner, in my opinion, are in a totally different league than the other two.
