Re: Best Neck Pickups

What do you think the best pickups for the neck position are?

It all depends on what kind of guitar you're playing. In my Firebird I love my SD Jazz. It's actually one of the best pickups in the world for the tone I'm after, which is harplike thin transparency. In a semi-hollowbody, I like P-90s in the neck. In my Telecaster, I prefer a lower wind pup like the Vintage 52. What kind of guitar do you play and what kind of tone are you after? The SD website has a lot of tone-finding stats that might help you in your search.

Re: Best Neck Pickups

How do the newbies manage to find these ancient threads to necro bump? I can barely get the search function to work let alone dig something up from 2004.

Re: Best Neck Pickups

Plus, you guys all fell into the trap.

C'mon..."Best"?

Anything you can come up with is the "best" for some particular application.

Re: Best Neck Pickups

Rolling my eyes at the thread necromancy here, but I'll take this opportunity to say that the neck pickup on the EBMM Axis is incredible. That's my all-time favorite neck pickup.

Re: Best Neck Pickups

Honestly I think there si no "best" pickup but "the most adequate to your needs". I would suggest you taking some desitions: Do you prefer single coil or HB for neck? Do you prefer vintage, medium or hot output? Do you need versatility or focused on some specific music genere.

For my it is single coils and want versatility but still being able to play metal, acutally I like ended up choosing neck pickup as my priority and then look for a proper bridge to match it, that is how important neck sound is to me. Currently I love my YJM Fury Neck because of that - it works fine with SSL-1 in the middle IMHO - but I am still planing on testing more, like the STK-S7n (demo sounds so cool) or maybe someting hotter like HotRails.

Re: Best Neck Pickups

Lots of guys are going to come along and tell you that there is no "Best" pickup or anything and that tone is subjective and has to do with this and that and a whole lotta factors..... But they're wrong! The Pearly Gates is the best pickup! If it wasn't for the price I'd have a PG in everything! The Pearly Gates is even good on toast!
I'd stick a Pearly Gates in my girlfriend if I could! It would make her complaining a lot better to listen to!

Re: Best Neck Pickups

Not sure if there enough caveats to put into a reply for such a concept, lol!

I can say that my neck-position-palette has been invigorated more by some of the other options out there, such as the DMZ Liquifire, the DMZ humbucker From Hell and the DMT Nostalgia. Most any Duncan neck position needs some type of mod to get it to where I'd like it.

As for single-sized, I like the STK-S4n, the Hot Rail neck and the Lil '59n

But there ism it one that I consider the 'best'. That's a bit of a silly concept, since what's best for one is not for another....and that's before you even get in to all of the variables. If it sounds good to you, then it is good.

Well, apparently you haven't owned many neck PU's, as there are a number that are better than PGN's. Not enough treble and clarity for me, the same beef I have with '57's. Whatever a PGN does, a SethN does better. Some of the biggest, and loudest, fans of PGN's and '57's have owned few (if any) other neck PAF's. It's a big world out there, try some.

"well that's just like.... Your opinion man..." ;)
You make some good points and I do agree but I must admit I was actually joking in the post :) (didn't seem to work though)
Personally my favourite pickup IS the PGN because it sounds exactly what I want my sound to sound like. For jazz and garage rock it fits perfectly.
I was just joking about there being a best pickup. I guess it changes from person to person and also for different applications.

That right there is exactly what people around here dont get. Next time you see someone get snubbed cause they dont love the Custom 8 or they like the way A2's sound in Phat cats this is what people need to remember. I myself have 2 sets of seths and shocking enough one set isnt in a guitar yet I do have a guitar that has a set of 57 classics in it that I like just fine. This is heresy to some around here but its ok they just chalk up that they know "TONE" better than you.

I got the joke and pretty sure others did too - good one Chock! While we are on the topic I vote for Zephyrs or many from the SD vintage series.

Re: Best Neck Pickups

Depends on what tone in each wood you like. I personally like awarm pickups with big midranges in bright wood, so I'd take a hot rails if it's a single coil size, and either an air norton, breed neck, or liquifire for full sized humbucker.
