Best neck plates for Strats?

I've heard people support thicker neck plates and even avoiding neck plates altogether and screwing/threading directly into the body and neck (sorry if I'm not describing it correctly.)

Thoughts?

I've always used whatever plates I had lying around. Can't say I've noticed any differences.

I am pretty OCD about mine, I want them to match color wise to the rest of the hardware.

I don't know either...I'm all for a thicker plate but was just wondering because some are thicker and reasonable and some are pretty pricey.

Whoa! That's crazy!

1/4" aluminum jabbing me in the gut the whole time im playin? hell no.

Re: Best neck plates for Strats?

The plate is there primarily to make sure the screws are not burying themselves into the wood when torqued. The prime 'tone enhancement' factor is the squareness and evenness of the two mated surfaces.

Re: Best neck plates for Strats?

Neck plates do not affect guitar tone. Vocal tone, yes. Guitar tone never.

As a fan of set-neck, neck-through, and Ibanez AANJ, I try not to need too many neck plates. A Jackson Dinky and the Blueman Signature Strat are my only exceptions at present, and I would hesitate to speculate on any performance characteristics of those instruments that these products may or may not impact.

Re: Best neck plates for Strats?

I've always maintained that the best material for tone for a neckplate is meteorite from an asteroid in the INNER part of the asteroid belt. None of that outer belt bullcrap. Everyone knows the denser and more toneful materials are in the inner rings.

You find yourself a meteorite from that part of the asteroid belt, create a neck plate out of that, and the only way your tone could be any better is if you're standing on a persian rug.

I had one of those but i sold it.

Re: Best neck plates for Strats?

it ain't a question of tone, its a question of build quality. All cheap neckplates warp at the corners, and do not distribute the weight of the torque or forces, pr whatever it is,evenly.

I always use solid cold rolled steel Callaham neckplates-they offer a great balance of strength to weight, and are made like the pre-cbs stuff I believe.. I also found some very heavy thick steel neck plates for about 2o bucks on the 'bay, I also found a $20.00 Ti neckplate which is very lghtweight and rigid.

Hauntuang ( spelling?), who makes Ti stuff on ebay, used to market some steel neckplates form Hungary, I bought one, and they are excellent- worlds better than cheapo Chinese and Fender neckplates -but I do not think they do so any longer.

Cheap neckplates like Fender suck!~

Nothing about the function of the neckplate requires even response or lack a warp at the corners though. It is simply an aethetic issue affecting the of the look of the finish in an area you would only ever see if the plate was off.

Re: Best neck plates for Strats?

As someone else mentioned, the plate simply keeps the head of the screw from digging into the neck. Assuming the screws are properly aligned when they are installed, into holes properly drilled, I see no way that the "corners" of the plate could "warp". The screws are holding the plate into place, not the other way around.

I love Callaham's website, but a lot of his pitches go by me. To much $$$$$$$.
