Yah, i know the bd-2 blues driver right?
whats the FZ 2? Fuzz?

Yeah, the FZ-2 was released for a short time I think in the early 90s/ late 80s. VERY powerful volume boost which you can couple with VERY powerful fuzz . . . sounds like somthing that might be right up your alley . . .

I don't think you want a clean boost, because the 5150 has more than enough gain on tap. You could just turn the gain up on the amp. It seems to me you want that textured mix of the 5150 preamp gain a little lower, but fed with a pedal that introduces it's own grit. I normally don't recomend this one, but a Japanese, or Keely modded DS-1 could be perfect if you're a gainaholic. If you like saturated tones, then that's the Vai recipe, to use the amp mid level and a "real" DS-1 in front, rather than an SD or TS. It should be said with the Boss stuff that Japanese or Keely modded is the "good stuff" while the new Taiwan boxes are good, but more of a "big guitar store impulse items" these days.

Frraaanky! Good to see another 7 stringer over here.

He's basically using the OD to boost his pickups signal, smack the preamp in the ass harder. The end result is a tighter, cleaner, clearer, punchier sound that sits way better in a mix because of the mid hump/bass cut/smooth high end of a tubescreamer.

That's really what you're trying to do, WFD. I wouldn't look into anything but the TS's and the Fulltone OCD/FullDriveII, as the others probably aren't going to have the mid boost/low cut/smooth high end of those, which is what you're trying to get with the pedal.

Hails JP!

Just be aware, the stock TS-9 is ok but Modded it really is the ****! Since I know about how picky high gain players can be about their tone (Looking in the mirror :) ) I would suggest looking at Robert Keeley's modded TS-9 or Indyguitarist or whoever else is doing the same thing.

I have modded my TS-9 myself so it has the correct bass response without ever mudding up! I has become a big part of my tone now leaving it on at all times exept when playing clean.

One more thing to look into is getting Celestion Vintage 30 speakers, you'll love those they sound way more brutal and saturated than the stock marshall speakers.

Re: Best OD/Distortion pedal to boost an amp...

I've had great results with a Maxon OD9 Tube Screamer thing, a TC Jaurnig DGTM (kind of a Tube Screamer on 'roids) and a Pro Co Turbo Rat set for low gain and high volume (I know that seems unbelievable but it works). Nowadays, the only OD I use is the Twin Tube Classic. No kidding--that thing kills, whether it's at low gain or fully cranked.

Thank´s NIGHTBURST.
Man, i have a 4x12 with 4 g12-t-75.. and i guess it will be HARD to trade 2 of the speakers or sell them and buy 2 new ones... the v30´s
but, i´l try it.. also, i just starting to like the Greenbacks too.

Re: Best OD/Distortion pedal to boost an amp...

I agree with DSS3 there WFD, a good TS modded (*cough* stratdeluxer) or one of the fulltone products (ocd, fat boost ect) should fit your bill. and of course it wouldnt hurt to grab a SD pickup booster or Twin Tube classic =)

my humble .02 cents

SGS=Solo Guitar Stewie... Yah i agree with both of you.
but i need to test the tones MYSELF. ahahahahah i know i´ll end up getting one of those two..
and i also would like to test the DS-1. i need to feel what each of those pedals will add to my sound, BAD AND good things, and choose from it.

Re: Best OD/Distortion pedal to boost an amp...

Well dude I just bought a Digitech Bad Monkey that should be here in 2 or so days :) Then I'll have to mod my SD1 to TS808 specs and I'll tell you more details on them if you wish :)

Re: Best OD/Distortion pedal to boost an amp...

J.P,
Hails bro :d.. long time no see... I need to be here more often.

I personally like the MXR Microamp. its a clean booster pedal. Its pretty transparent and has alot of output if needed. To my ears, it helps tighten up the tone a bit and add some sparkle to the highend without making it harsh at all.

Check into that if you'd like.

Also.. what power tubes are you currently using in there? maybe what you need is a fresh set of power tubes. I personally recommend JJ 6L6GCs. very tight, aggressive with highgain and has a meaty tone to it.

hope that helps!
