Best overall overdrive pedal?

Re: Best overall overdrive pedal?

Overdrive as in a boost for gainy amp? Or on top of a clean channel? What is the amp? What is the guitar?

There is no best, really. Only pedals that suit some amps amps, some that suit others. Others that suit some guitars, some that suit others. Some that suit your taste.

Re: Best overall overdrive pedal?

As long as it is yellow, it will be the absolute best.

This is the fact, and the only answer to your question. Any other answer will be wrong.

Re: Best overall overdrive pedal?

To springboard off of others, it depends. Different amps even from the same company take pedals differently. And some pedals love humbucker and hate single coils (and vice versa.)

I really love the Suhr Shiba and Mad Professor Golden Cello thru my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe but don't really care for either one through my Vox Valvetronix.

I would say, what gear do you plan on using?

To expand on what Trey said, I'd look into Pedal Genie and rent OD Pedals for a couple of months..
Try as many as possible and find the one you like best.. It is true that some pedals are better with single coils like my MojoMojo. It sucks with humbuckers.
Some are better with some amps than others and some amps are better at taking pedals than others.
I am on the waiting list for an Analogman King of Tone.. I can't wait to get it..
I am getting ready to buy a Wampler Clarksdale OD or an SD 805, I haven't made my mind up yet.
I have an MXR Badass Modified OD that works with everything I plug it into or plug into it..
I love that OD Pedal, I haven't found an amp or a guitar that I can't get either a dirty blues tone or stack on a crunch tone and get a sweet lead tone out of..
Best $100 I have ever spent.. Gearmandude talked me into it probably 3 years ago..
The EQ shift on it is amazing!
If you have multiple guitars I'd suggest maybe starting there.. I play the same music that you do but I use my Red channel on my EVH for my hair metal tone..
It nails saturated bliss without pedals..

Re: Best overall overdrive pedal?

There is no best or better only preferences. You need to go play a bunch of them and find out what works for you. Two people can have the same box and it can sound completely different due to a host of parameters. How they dial in the effect box, their guitar, the amp and even the person's technique playing. My holy grail of overdrive might be the worst pedal you ever played.

Re: Best overall overdrive pedal?

Please ignore all erroneous advice above. The best overdrive is always the one you don't own yet. It is an animal that can't be tamed - a hunger that can't be satisfied. The drive to find the best overdrive is to a destination that is destined to never be reached. Give up now before all your wealth is squandered.

Re: Best overall overdrive pedal?

The best overdrive pedal is going to be the one that gets you off a forum and in front of an amp. Boss OD-1, TS-808, whatever.

Ha! The illusive drive pedal! ;)

A couple months ago I would have agreed with you BUT now I'm set with my Golden Cello and Shiba :D

...for the time being and then its back to the drawing board ;)

Re: Best overall overdrive pedal?

A certain green one comes to mind, too...

LOL! You nailed that!
I could have every OD on the market and still want something different..

Further complicated by the fact that new ones are constantly being introduced, and with improvements. You can't keep up.

There is no best overall overdrive pedal. What works best for each of us is dependent on your tastes, your guitar design, wood, PU's, amp, tube, speakers, etc. This is not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing. It's the end result of a multitude of things that effect your tone.
