If I want the sound of growling into a saxophone, I can add a little grit to my guitar with an overdrive etc. Jazz has come a long way from the trad jazz stereotypes and misunderstandings I always see posted on guitar forums.

Personally I have not used od/dist pedals for a long time, while I develop new stuff and eventually will get back making a few of them again, I do not use them myself, all of the enormous amount of pedals I have used and tried, all had that strange stiffness and dryness(subtle in some but still present).

It gets better when used live and loud, but it is still not like an amp, claims of amplike behaviour is there, in in some ways some pedals do it, but they cannot escape that they are just pedals, with subtle or not so subtle differences from a real amp.
Just the nature of the beast.
And has been so for some decades now, all kinds of variations and different setups have been used throughout the times.

You know, I recently got a Fender Blues Jr. that was upgraded to a Cannabis Rex speaker and JJ reds–with the volume cranked to about 3 o'clock and the master volume at just under 10 o'clock, it produces a super sweet overdrive that is so natural and organic sounding! Super clear cleans with a light touch and then exceptional drive with you dig into the strings!

I will still say that the Mad Professor Golden Cello is worth a look...I really love that pedal! Warm overdrive and just different from any other overdrive pedal I've used.

You might know Overdrive Pedals are good for those who want to hide their playing techniques.
I recommend trying a muff style pedal in a guitar store environment, in your model of amp, or even take your marshall in to try the pedal with it.
There is no need to buy fancy & costly overdrive pedal.
For more details about guitar pedals, do your research properly & be a Pro-Guitarist as soon as possible.

A single muff in a guitar store environment is not an overdrive. Twin Muffs (as you have linked to) do not qualify by any means as overdrive pedals. And where on your list do you put the good ODs? I only see 3, but I might not be looking hard enough.

But you are correct, the #1 reason most people buy distortion effects is too hide our sloppy playing. Any other tonal qualities they impart are just unfortunate side effects.

Maybe back in the day, but nowadays, people buy distortion effects so they can get an incredibly vague facsimile of a cranked amp...
...with their tube amp's volume on .5

I own several rigs and I own 3 Peavey Rockmaster preamps, Rocktron Gainiac, Rocktron XDC, 2 Rocktron Silver Dragons, 3 BK Butler/Tube Works Real Tube pedals, 1 modified BK Butler/Tube Works Blue Tube pedal, TC Electronics Tube Pilot, Radial Tonebone Classic and a Behringer Vintage Tube Monster VT-999. I like and prefer tube pedals. My non-tube pedals are Fuchs Tri-Mode Cerebrus, TC Electronics MojoMojo and Lovepedal Les Lius.

I forgot to add my Electro-Harmonix English Muff'n for some Marshall tube tones.

My favourites can't be had by anyone else because they're one off builds. My "Cornhole" overdrive is the only overdrive I'll ever need (total anti-green. Can switch out the mid hump and instead of sucking out the bass, it shifts it to a nicer spot). and my custom fuzz based off the companion knocked off the big muff as nastiest fuzz I've ever heard.

I use pedals instead of tubes, jack inputs are pedals too...the speaker is a pedal....
The amp is no longer an amp, it is now a pedal....
Best overall pedal...is overall......
And they all need a blender with all this hardcore seriel pedalworks....
I have pedalstrings with blenders.....tuner pedals that are true bypassed with external profffffeeesssional buffers(blendable mind you).
Even have the optional "tonesuck" pedal....with a blender and stainless smooth steel....for that emulated sound of tonesuck...all in a pedal!

Life is a pedal, the earth is a pedal(flat)!
And it is all blendable....
My own blend that it is!
