Hey I am thinking of goin for a P 90 neck pup for my epi lp, so what's the best option for a great clean sounding P 90???

Re: Best P 90 pickup for les paul??

Assuming that this Epi LP is routed for humbuckers, how about a P-Rails and a Triple Shot mounting surround (or some push-pull pots) for the mode switches?

Re: Best P 90 pickup for les paul??

The original P-Rails is a good choice (not the P-Rails Hot).

Also, the GFS Mean 90 is an excellent p-90 for only about $30. I've got them in two of my guitars, an LP and an SG, and they sound great in both guitars. These pups made me a believer and a very strong advocate for P-90s. It really is the perfect pup for Classic - hard Rock.

The Mean 90 really does sound terrific in a LP, bridge or neck.

Yea I have a mean 90 in my epi lp Jr sounds sick! I think I'm going to go with the mean 90 for the neck ya can't beat a 30$ buck pup....

Do you have a mean 90 set in your lp?

+1. Mean 90's are surprisingly good. If you go the Phat Cat route, the neck is very dark and the bridge is 'weak and thin' (to quote Zhang). I just don't see A2's working in a P-90. For the neck slot on an LP, a Phat Cat with twin A5's is very good (I have that in an Epi LP myself).

Yeh. It's in the bridge of my favorite Go-To LP (Epi LP Ultra, Mean 90b/PGn). I also have it in my SG Custom. I love it in both guitars.

If I didn't love versatility so much, I would put P-90s in at least 20 of my guitars.

Re: Best P 90 pickup for les paul??

I've only played Gibson P-90's, so I won't give anybody any falsely-attributed second-hand assumptions (haha!), but I'd give the Mean 90's a try. You can't lose for $30 and I heard on guitar forums they rock.

;)

Re: Best P 90 pickup for les paul??

The bridge phat cat is thin sounding compared to a humbucker, but it wasn't thin sounding. Brighter than the Seth Lover, but not terribly.

The p94 by comparison is thin and fizzy sounding whenever I've played one.

I've played around with the P-Rails in a friend's guitar. It had the same problem that the Godin P90s have - it doesn't sound like a P90 to me. It sounds more like a fender single coil with more guts. P90s are supposed to have a kind of rudeness in the mids.

+1 to this. After installing them last week, I'm a believer.

Not so hard. A Rebel 90 or Mean 90.

Re: Best P 90 pickup for les paul??

Tonerider does humbucker-sized P-90s. So, surprisingly enough, does Gibson. :)

Re: Best P 90 pickup for les paul??

F. F. Lee has some Zlang P90s in His Tokai gold top but He is considering trying these. He will attempt to determine (HWATD) if they might sound good for other styles than that of Mr. Corsa.

Thank you.

Yes, the Rebel 90's! I think they are fantastic. They have Alnico 2 magnets, output at around 7.9k/8.5k and are very well-crafted. SD Phat Cats are also supposed to be excellent, for a little more money.

My Mean 90 (A5/A3) neck in my '84 LPC is the titz.

Sounds so good my other guitarist just bought one for his 335.

Though I def. recommend you use an A5/A3 combo, A3/A3 combo, and/or disconnect the neck tone pot. (thinking abt doing this myself.)

Re: Best P 90 pickup for les paul??

Recently I've done an experience and replaced the 59n in my SG with a Mean 90. The one thing I know is that I'm really enjoying it. Blueman and GuitarDoc, how is your experience with the Mean 90 bridge? (I'm planning on getting one for this SG).

In most A5 P-90's, the bridge is too bright and thin for me (once the amp is EQ'd to get the neck right), so I use warmer mags in the bridge slot, like an A8/A4, A8/A5, UOA5/UOA5, and A4/A4. The only bridge P-90's that I don't swap mags with are Rio Bastards and Fat Bastards, which are warm to begin with.

Re: Best P 90 pickup for les paul??

2013-04-14 17.22.53.jpg had this installed yesterday, amazing transformation, very happy with the choice of Phat Cat. Having pots replaced tomorrow with CTS 500k and 300k and vit Q cap, its a bit bright with the both 500k at the moment. I was surprised at how much cheaper the stock humbucker appeared (wax seeping out, plain backing plate) than the two I took out of a G400. The G400 pups were very nicely built with "Epiphone" engraved on the back, I guess thats what another $400 buys you ($NZ). Well pleased with the upgrade, am thinking of maybe a p90 dogear antiquity for the Gibson LPJ now......damm I think I may be addicted to modding now
