Re: Best PAF?

The EMG Fat 55 is the latest pickup I have used and I think it is a little hotter than the JB.
Plenty of power for classic rock and could easily be used for punk/metal as it retains a nice low end crunch.
Cleans are great too.
I swapped the EMG 81/60 set in my LTD ec1000fr for the FAT 55 set as I found the 81/60 set to be too scratchy and way too powerful for me, they also gave rather clinical clean sounds.
The FAT 55 set is a lot smoother in its mids and highs and gives a nice bite when you ask it to.
Clean sounds are far nicer than the 81/60 set too.
They also compare favourably with the JB/Jazz combo I also use atm as well as the various PAF units I have used in the past (fitted to the 5 different gibsons I previously owned).

Re: Best PAF?

Slightly off topic, but what was Larry thinking? The DiMarzio PAF was a good pickup, the 36th is awful, but the new '59 is better than the old PAF! Now we have the "PAF Master"?

Anyway, sorry to derail. Carry on

The old paf sounded a bit different than a paf because of the baseplate material, it’s still around but only in the aired version, you can just un-air it and have the old paf. The 36th was supposed to be a truer representation of a paf complete with a slightly offset wind but it still has an a5 which isn’t exactly correct either. It’s a newer take of the virtual paf. The paf master expands on the idea by using A4 which may be a bit closer to an old PAF. All different flavors of the paf wind.

Re: Best PAF?

What aired version? I have a few PAF, VPAF, and VHPAF still in the drawer. I never cared for the 36th in anything I tried. I have the new '59 things in a Les Paul currently, and I like them just enough to not replace them. I still would not take them over Duncan Antiquities.

Re: Best PAF?

FWIW, the '59 is the meanest-sounding PAF I've encountered. I love how the bridge version does high-gain.

Re: Best PAF?

I suggest a '59/Custom Hybrid in the bridge and the Jazz in the neck.

I have those pickups in my all mahogany Fret-King Esprit V which I love. They certainly cover punk/rock/old school metal, plus I have mine split for some slightly spankier tones.

Re: Best PAF?

Lol, not everyone mods pickups
The PAF Master bridge is A4 and no need to dick around with it

Yeah, but its fair to say that just because a pickup has a certain mag doesn't mean its got the same tone as another. If you were expecting the same tone as an A4 '59 then you would certainly have to 'dick around' with the PAF Master

Can't get a little pregnant.

If you are swapping pickups, you are already dicking around with them. Besides, magnets are cheaper than pickups.

The air classic dp191 is the same as their old dp103 PAF before they redesignated the model number to the 36th. All you have to do is un -air it, and it’s the same as the old version.
