Best passive pickup for metal.....

Re: Best passive pickup for metal.....

Careful around here talking about EMGS....haha hah you will here the Sterile a WHOLE LOT!

Im with Lester....go with a JB or an INVADER!

Though on that guitar a custom 5 would fit nicely you'll get mids galore on that guitar...and the custom 5 is a tad scooped.

I guess my biggest fear is getting it and it sounding no better than the stock pickups that are in it.

I'm an EMG guy so when I switch to an axe loaded with EMG's I can tell a huge difference in clarity and articulation.

1st statment) 21 day exchange policy

2nd statment) if you like emgs, use emgs. simple. but maybe you should 'broaden your horizens' as my dad would say it, and try some duncans. if you dont like the first one you get exchange it for another one. keep doing that until you find a pickup that gives you the best tone in your opinion, or until you've tried the hole duncan line of humbuckers.

Hence the thread.

I know I could just throw EMG's in it and be happy but I think if I could find a more musical pickup that could still do what I'm already doing then I would be REALLY happy:)

Sure looks like a normal pickup with one coil screws, the other coil slugs...

Anyone know what Tele this guitar is? Never saw one with a 3x3 headstock before...

Re: Best passive pickup for metal.....

those are some sort of framus guitars, mark used those before he got a deal with jackson. And that video is the video for "11th hour" which was off of their cd that is before the newest one (as the palaces burn). He could have used any pickup on that album in that guitar. But, in the last 3 issues of guitar world, 2 of them had 'a vulger display of power'(section where they do a diagram of people's rigs) of the lamb of god guitarists. Those said that both of them use invaders in the bridge of their main guitars and willie uses a jb in his backup guitar. Those were their current rigs at the time, which is probably what they use/used in the making of the newest cd and on the sumbiminal verses tour.

Well now we has to get into detials. We know what amp your using and what style of music this pickup is going to be for but now we need to no this:

a)What do you want the pickup to be like tonaly?
and
b)What other specs would you perfer the pickup to have(magnet, output, ect.)

Re: Best passive pickup for metal.....

Basically I want a pickup with an aggressive voicing with tons of clarity. Something pretty even across the tonal spectrum with solid mids. And I want to stay away from icepick/shrill highs. So basically something well rounded with good mids and an agressive bite without being shrill.

Re: Best passive pickup for metal.....

If you dont want shrill then stay the hell away from the dimebucker, that the #1 complaint ive heard about it. The jb seem to have a good even i.q. You should check out the pickup i.q. chart, thats how i and alot of other people are getting this info.

Remember this is going into a moghogany bodied guitar, so the dimebucker would probably has just the right amout of highs.

Custom, Distortion, JB, and Dimebucker
all fit the bill then.

that sure as hell looks like an invader to me

Re: Best passive pickup for metal.....

oh yeah got mixed up between the mahogany and alders i.q. but anyways the custom,jb,and distortion should all be good choices. even though the bodys mahogany i still think the dimebucker would be close call, because its kind of known for that ice pick shreddy high i.q. that dimebags known for.

+1. What may appear to be slugs is glare.

Actually if you see the video in the link I posted, you get a better idea that those aren't the huge black oxide button head cap screws. Not to toot my own horn, but I can spot an Invader pretty quickly even in a grainy video.

Re: Best passive pickup for metal.....

dude i cant stand the JB for metal!!!!!! its crap if you ask me, good for classic rock not metal... i play black/death/thrash metal so i like lots of gain and clarity... the JB cant put up with high gain it gets all staticy... UGLY

BUT anyways... if your looking for heavyness with lots of clarity... try EMG Selects

the duncan distortion is GREAT but if your looking for something close to the emg 81 in a passive form

USE THE EMG SELECT PICKUPS, they are amazing!!!! they have low output level so they get PERFECT clarity... but surprisingly they still sound heavy with lots of gain... its AMAZING ... honestly try it, they are cheap too... like 40 bucks

if you dont wanna try the EMG Select then try a Dimarzio X2N , they are also great, higher output (like 14k) but not as clear as the select...

another good one is the kent armstrong ultra distortion... 20k DC Resistance (high output.. veryyyyyy high) they get better gain than duncan distortions but a LITTLE bit less clarity... so maybe you dont want this if your looking for clarity

clarity wise id say the EMG Select is the best out of the ones i listed.. then the X2N, then duncan distortion.. then the K.A. ultra distortion

but if gains what you want, K.A. Ultra Distortion.. Duncan Distortion, Dimarzio X2N.. then EMG Select

you can search yahoo/google for kent armstrong website.. and the emg select dont seem to be listed on emg's website but you can prolly find em on music gear sites

Re: Best passive pickup for metal.....

Use any high output SD pickup except the Invader. It is not a good match to mahogany. It sounds awesome in alder or ash though

Re: Best passive pickup for metal.....

I don't need a pickup with insane amounts of gain or output, as I have an amp that has tons of gain.

I'm gonna try the Custom and the JB I think.
