hi
with my Laney, i have tried a lot of pedals

now i would like a pedal which sounds like a Mesa boogie for metal

i can have a US Steel tech 21

i would like the throttle box eq Mesa Boogie (i had the throttle box but without the eq, it was not interesting )

i like the old tones that Lukather had
i like the jOhn Sykes tones too (mesa boogie)
or Petrucci

Wow! That was spot on. May have to check that out.

Any idea what he was going through when using the pedal? I'm wondering how it sound thru a Sunn Beta Lead.

He ran both preamps (the R1 is a preamp pedal) through a Torpedo Live. (Poweramp/cab sim.)

You'd want the R2 as it has an output to be used as a drive pedal. (Although you could plug it into the FX return on the amp as well if it has one.) I think the Sunn amp would definitely bring the heaviness.

Re: best pedal for heavy metal / pedal

good idea
us steel
throttle box eq

i want that sound

Those look like Marshall amps.

Re: best pedal for heavy metal / pedal

Personal experience, if you want a good sounding metal pedal, avoid anything that includes METAL as part of its name. I have always been disappointed by anything marketed specifically as a metal pedal.

Re: best pedal for heavy metal / pedal

it's too hard to find an amp for metal heavy metal without the dsl
i think the dsl it is not hard enough for me (about the sound ) even if i have never had at home
i played with a dsl5c some minutes

listen to John Sykes : his sound is really good

not 100% metal
not dsl
just mesa boogie

i do what i can with my laney lc 15-110

i have a lot of pedals so i know what i do not want lol

-ht dual : yes it's good for dynamic and a lot of hum !
-metal muff : i like it for rhythmics
-metal zone : why is it so hated?

-mxr fullbore metal is really for low low mediums ! but it is not like the mt 2

i tried the Mesa boogie throttle box : it's more a rock pedal
but the throttle box eq must be like the sound of my video clip

- Tech 21 us steel
-AMT r2
-bogner red : not metal but u want it too :))

you know you can try POD FARM 2 line 6 with some amps and you can listen to what i like
it sounds like LUkather with toto before his BOgner

it is fantastic for rhythm

Re: best pedal for heavy metal / pedal

Personally I'd invest the money into upgrading the amp, but that's only cos I prefer to get my tone from the amp mainly, then add pedals later if I need.

Not saying a Laney is bad but maybe if you can get a better amp first and then adjust it from there.

Re: best pedal for heavy metal / pedal

I've been through this lately myself with a Laney Cub 12R. Connecting it to a closed back cab helped, but still not quite there.

Not that I'm not getting a good metal tone between the cab and my pedals, just not the tone I want.

My next step is a new amp. I have my eye on the Peavey 6505MH or a Marshall DSL15H. I would like to be able to have the option of only using a Tube Screamer or boost to get my lead tone and rely on just the amp for crunch.

My current metal sound is the result of my amp set just barely clean, then from the guitar I go to a Son Of Hyde with gain at 10 o'clock, treble at 10 o'clock mids at 11 o'clock, level at just a hair above unity gain; then into an Open Road with gain at 10 o'clock, tone at 2 o'clock and level at 2 o'clock, then a graphic EQ with a slight boost of the low mid sliders, a slight cut go the high mids ( turn on for rhythm tone, turn off for leads).

The Sykes clip you posted was pretty much all Marshall. He did use Boogie Colliseum heads for the Whitesnake album, but he has used Marshalls a lot too.

Part of the problem may be the 10" speaker in the Laney, have you tried running into a 1-12 cab?

Re: best pedal for heavy metal / pedal

Line6 AM-4 Amp Modeler. You can set it up for 4 different amp models, just like their POD stuff, but it doesn't have all the extra effect crap with it. It's designed to run into a power amp, though, so maybe going into the FX Return of the Laney would be best. It gets the Mesa, Marshall, Fender, Roland, etc tones, or at least close enough for a bedroom amp/player.

Marshall amps do not sound like that
i have never heard him with this sound with thin lizzy with jcm
so ?

i tried 1-12 cab but i need a heavy metal sound
and a hard rock, fuzzy sound too
so, 3 sounds lol

Look at the EVH 5150iii combo. I have the 1x12 and it does everything you want. I'm strictly a bedroom player and the scalable power makes it very versatile.
