Best Pickup For A Laminate SG

So the other day I picked up an Epi SG Jr (old style single humbucker 1v1t) because it played well and had an added killswitch and quality tuners. Problem is: it sounds somewhat dead through my setup. Tried a pickup I had custom wound for me in it and it's still not right (it's spec'd to a Dimarzio D-Ac bridge). The body is laminate alder and maple (supposedly) with a basswood neck. Thinking about buying a Blackout for it. I play a lot of metal with forrays into neoclassical cleans. The lowest I ever tune is C, and I usually just stay in E. I play through 4 amps, but this will mainly be used with my Roland Cube 30W.
Would a Blackout be best or should I stick to passive?
I have an Invader coming soon and I have a JB I could move around and drop in. I'm open to suggestions, active and passive.
Thanks!

Some guitars just don't sound that good, especially if the wood is poor. I'd skip that Blackout cuz it would be a pain to change the batteries if it still didn't sound that good. I'd go for a "character" pickup like that JB, which has more of a tendency to inflict its personality on various guitars.

How does the axe sound unplugged?

Somewhat bright, with a bit of mids. Not much bass. I checked my mail today to find a happy surprise, a Gibson 498T I bought like a week ago arrived (and though it hadn't even shipped yet), so I installed it on a whim. Really liking it so far, I'm almost feeling stupid making this post, but I hadn't seen one like this in the search, so I guess it's ok lol
For future reference for people like me who end up with a laminate, what were you going to suggest?

i was going to see what you said about its unplugged sound. Having read your description i would probably have said to go for a custom because it fills in the low end and adds punch, plus it sounds good with any magnets you can put in there if you decide to tweak it. Glad the gibtone pickup is working out for you!
