Best Pickup For an SG ( Custom vs Custom 5 vs Alternative 8)

Re: Best Pickup For an SG ( Custom vs Custom 5 vs Alternative 8)

Ditch the circuit board, get 4 new pots for $20 and rewire it normal and use the pickups you want.

or, swap the magnet in your custom. A8 maybe?

Gibson stock pots I feel often are too low a value. I don't know what are in the 2010 model, but I would throw 500k CTS in there and try your custom out with that before making a judgment, at least that is what I would advise.

I like that idea a lot actually. Except I like the neck pickup so I'd definitely keep it. it's a 1 conductor cable with the gray wrapped around a black and white wire I think, any way to get around that? and I do agree their values are too low, I have to run both pickups at a volume of ten just to get a decent volume level.

find out which one is hot, and which ones are ground. I'd just solder it on.

simply out of laziness though, are there any gibson pickups that are a cross between a JB and Distortion that have the pluggy thingy? I just wanna play happily yo

500T but not sure if you can find one with the plug on the end but just buy some from mouser they are only a few cents each.

Re: Best Pickup For an SG ( Custom vs Custom 5 vs Alternative 8)

Hey Guys , i had the Custom (Sh-5) installed on my SG for about a week , now i didnt wanted to make this review before , so i could have a few days of playing to compare the tones between the JB and the Custom on my SG. Well i have to say that i liked very much of the custom, it gave me the punch and the lows that was lacking with the JB , dont get me wrong , i love the JB and and already put it in another guitar ( a custom "dark" strat, mahogany body, maple neck, rosewood scale , well the JB sounds awesome in that guitar :) ) , but i think the thinner body of the SG needs a pickup with more defined lows and the custom filled that role , the mids are a little scooped , but that's a good thing in a SG , a guitar with lots of natural mids , so it kinda balanced the tone on the mids. ok and what about the highs ? well i liked it too it has less of the mid spike bite of the JB that i wasnt liking on the SG ( altough it is great on the mahogany strat , because the guitar is a heavier strat) , but the trick to tame a little bit of the "bite" of the highs was to use Ernie Ball Cobalt strings , this strings at least on my SG , tames the highs of the guitar , but not in a bad way ( well the only downside is if u want to play some Ozzy ( zakk wylde era) songs , No More Tears becomes No More Pinches ^^ ) the harmonics on the low strings(especially the E string) becomes hard to execute , but the cobalt balances the highs of the custom perfectely if u dont care much about Zakk low E string pinch harmonics ,you're gonna be just fine. I'm loving this pickup on the SG , but i want to give it a try on the Alnico 8 in the future to see it the tone is improved even more ( i believe it can be improved). All the description of PAF on steroids are accurate , and with the cobalt the pickup now is very balanced with great punch and great mids coming from the SG and good higs ( better with cobalt string at least to my ears) . The guitar is sounding like a Les Paul now the way i wanted in the beginning of the thread ? Of course not , that's impossible and i know, but to me the tone its more on the les paul side of the things now and that's what i always wanted to happen . The cleans on the custom are better than in the JB too ( not bashing on the JB , i love that pickup too, just not the right pickup for a SG , at least for my tastes) I'm quite happy for now . i've playing this SG through a Marshall DSL 5c with a 1x12 Mesa cab with a V30, using a ZW-44 for OD and a Boss Rv-3 for some reverb and delay ocasionalluy cuz i'm not gigging or rehearsing at the moment , but through this rig i'm getting nasty tones everyday \m/
