Best pickup for Ibanez S570B

Hi there,

In the near future I hope to replace my stock INF pickups in my Ibanez S570B with something with a bit more punch. The amp I'm currently using is a Peavey 6505+ running into a Mesa Boogie Rectifier cab. The sound I'm aiming for is similar to Killswitch Engage and Trivium. I've been told a Duncan Distortion in the Bridge and a 59' (cleans) would be a good set up for this guitar. I just want to consider other good options that would help me hit the sound I'm after.

Any help would be appreciated :)

Cheers

The Dist is a fantastic pup. Might consider the Demon for the neck.

How well does the Demon fair for clean to distortion? :)

The Screamin' Demon makes a great neck pickup when paired with a higher output bridge pickup (like the Distortion). Very punchy, tight and clear.

I'm going to throw a set of Distortions in my Ibby 7 string soon. I have similar tastes in music. However for nailing the tone those 2 bands in particular you might want consider blackouts. (passive mounts).

Don't get me wrong. I love passives. But actives may suit your needs better. Either way, Their are several Duncan Pups that can nail the metal core sound: distortion, full shred, custom, invader, blackout, JB, custom 5, especially with the amount of gain you have on tap.

I'd go with a jazz or 59 in the neck.. Maybe even the distortion neck.

good luck!

I think that with the S Series, you want as fat-sounding a pickup as you can, because the body is so damn thin.

... I'll come back with an actual suggestion when my brain's woken up, haha.

The Distortion is a great choice for the bridge. I like the Demon in the neck better than the 59 because you get more mids and more output (not quite as bright sounding as the 59). The Demon is very clear and articulate, but with the slight more output, you get more "push" than the 59 has. If the Demon sounds too bright you can always replace the mag with an A4, UOA5, or even an A2. IMO the Demon in the neck is a much better match to the Dist in the bridge.

Great suggestions thus far! Id also say a Distortion in the bridge. want to add a slight spin on your thoughts tho. The 59 is a great neck pup. However, on every guitar I have added a 59 in the neck (have a couple that came stock) I put a 59 bridge model in the neck position. I dont play alot of really clean stuff, so the 59 bridge model in the neck spot gives alittle more of a "smokey blues" tone for solos and such. Still cleans up well too.

Basswood Ibby? Modern Metal? I would go Dimarzio Crunchlab and Liquifire.....or the DActivator Xs......

59b in the neck is also a good suggestion.

Hey guys,
first of all I have to say sorry for my bad school english, but I'm trying my best.
I'm also playing an Ibanez S570B until now loaded with the stock pu's. Because the bridge one can't really convince me concerning sound, I'm thinking about replacing it. For me it's to trebly and flat, i'd like something with more pressure, which sounds warmer but has actually clear highs in both, high gain and clean setups. (mostly i play hard rock such as Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple) I thought of a Jeff Becks but I'm not sure if it does sound good in this slim mahagony body or if it is to trebly, too. I hope you can help me finding a fitting PU.
Best regards

Honestly, you might need to tweak your amp just a tad. If you want more out of your tone, you gotta crank the mids. That's the only way that you'll make yourself more prominent, and you'll sit a lot better in a mix or in a live band setting. Be sparing on the treble. I'd say have that at 1 or 2 o' clock maximum. Mahogany is gonna have a deep and dark sounding character naturally, so you'll have to be sparing on bass as well. Too much bass can make everything sound woofy, so depending on the amp, dial it in until you get a good balance.

If you happen to have a presence knob, that can help you bring some definition to the tone, making it a bit more percussive, which for your style is key.

If you already have settings similar to this, or tried it out and still feel like your tone leaves a lot to be desired, then that's when you can start considering what pick-ups up you need to get you from point A to point B in your tonal journey. Have your amp setting as a starting point, and then say, "I need more this and that" and research what pick-up has more of the characteristics that you want, and pull the trigger :smokin:

Re: Best pickup for Ibanez S570B

I popped a set of Parallel Axis pickups in my Ibanez S Series and it made a world of difference.
I've previously tried both a jazz and '59 neck alternatively with a JB in the bridge which did ok, although I thought it sounded better with a Custom in the bridge.
I even tried a set of P-Rails (with the hot bridge model) which I just could not get a decent sound out of.
I'd highly recommend trying them out.

Re: Best pickup for Ibanez S570B

Joshua ..Tell me, how well does it clean up. I mean real clean tones. And how would you compare the neck pup to the Jazz.

Re: Best pickup for Ibanez S570B

Thanks for all the answers.
@Mad Max, I already tried every single setup which is possible on my amp. Anyhow I really think I can get more out of my guitar with replacing bridge PU.
I know in which direction I want to go, but I can't decide which PU I should choose with only looking at the specs, because there is no comparison to the stock ones.
@joshuas5150: How do you define "OK"? Is the JB definitly better than the stock one in your opinion, or is it almost on same level?
@all: Ok, maybe it's the wrong forum, but has anyone experience with DiMarzio's in this guitar? I wrote an email to both, SD and DM on the weekend. I haven't got an answer from SD yet, but DM suggests a Transition. I never heard rom it before. Are there any experiences?
Best regards

Re: Best pickup for Ibanez S570B

The JB is a classic, but I would suggest you try an Alternative 8 first if going with Duncan. It's similar in many ways to a JB (fluid feel, great expressiveness, awesome harmonics), but adds warmth and body to the sound with more bass/low-mids and a slightly warmer top end. It still has great cut and clarity, but sounds full and lively. If considering DiMarzio, the AT-1 or Tone Zone are good bets for that guitar, but I still say try the Alternative 8 from Seymour Duncan first and see what you think.
