best pickup for sg

Re: best pickup for sg

Go for the PG in the neck!! It's awesome!!

I like the C5 in mine, but I hear the CC does very well also.

Re: best pickup for sg

I had a 59 in the neck of my SG and found it very bright, but I couldn't deal with that woofy-ness. Threw in a jazz and I feel its much better, plus its better matched for the C5 in the bridge.

That would be my first choice for an SG Std too.....C-5/Jazz N in nickel.
The CC might be too buttery sounding on the highs for an all mahogany guitar.

i vote for pearly gates in the bridge and a jazz in the neck. i think that combo would sound sweet in an sg.

Re: best pickup for sg

Sounds from that like you'd like the Jazz.

Do the 50's mod to both the neck volume control and bridge volume control.

It'll brighten things up and retain highs when you turn the volume of the guitar down.

Lew: Does it brighten things up even when the tone is on 10 (compared to stock)?

Re: best pickup for sg

I tryed CC in my SG twice. Trembucker and Humbucker. Great sound but this pup has no low end/punch and too much mids, pretty lifeless pup for SG. Now I'm using a Custom and is far better than CC in SG. Low end and punch are back. Custom is far more balanced than CC, present lows, certain amout of mids and a little agressive highs. I swapped ceramic bar for alnico8 bar and the highs became a little less agressive and sounded fatter.
I don't play metal, my music is classic rock (mostly 70's) and even with his 14k, my custom 8 rocks. This thing cleans up with volume knob like heaven. I play with a SLP all the time.

Even without swapping magnet, Custom, is my favorite bridge pickup.
Give it a try.
