best pickup wiring combinations

Consider an 3 pup guitar (though some great guitarists have gotten by
with considerably less). Neck alone and middle alone are "must haves".
Combinations of two pickups and/or middle alone are next
on the list (though "is the middle pickup useful" and "does anyone use
the middle position on their LP" threads are not uncommon.

Now come all the other tricks : bridge in reverse phase, phase
switches, coil cutting, all three pickups, etc...

What are the most successful "extra" combinations?

My favorite pup selection on a Strat is all three pups at once. I've found this to be true with 3 Cool Rails, 3 SSL-6's, and a mutt made up of a Lil 59, APS-1, and a Lil PG.

I think that the three pups balance and "buffer" the others to produce a nice airy tone. It has that "Knopfler" tone all over it.

A five way switch, master volume and master tone and a blender pot so the neck pickup can blended into the bridge pickup and vice versa. That's all you need. With that set up you can even get all three on at the same time by choosing the n & m and then blending the bridge pickup into it.Lew

The only mod I've never found a use for was my bridge "out-of-phase". Sounded like i was playing thru a transistor radio!:eek13:

Neck, Neck+Bridge, Bridge? That's all I use, and I love the middle position on both the LP and the Tele.

Okay, I'm hearing some votes for "all three". I hadn't thought of that
since neck+bridge (especially with coil cutters) seemed to give
enough clean, airy tone.

As far as neck + bridge out of phase, on a two pickup guitar it gave
me the closest to a quack sound, but on a 3 pup guitar I don't know
if it would come in handy. But I'm dowwnloading a bunch of Peter
Green material now, isn't he famous for using that tone?

Do blend pots color the tone or do they really work the way one would like?

A blend pot only colors the tone to the degree you want it to. Like having a neck and middle sounds different than having just the neck. Once the blend pot is dialed all the way in, it removes itself from the circuit. That is, all the resistance is bypassed. Its like having a switch, only you can "fade" it in rather than pop it in.

I have installed PRS McCarty style wiring in my guitar... But now what I would really like to be part of it is a Blending pot. Is anyone familier with doing this? Can it be done? Adding a blend pot to McCarty wiring?
