Looking for inexpensive Virtual PAF's. Best place?

Just buy them from a place like zzounds.com. They aren't that expensive (around 120 for a pair) and they're great pickups; I refuse to take them out of my Dean Chafin Del Sol.

GASP! Did you just mention the "D"-word on this forum. Shame on you...

Just kidding, they make good pups.

Actually, I like the the Dimarzio designed pups in my Nitefly. Great single coil tone, wide variety of tones across the three pups. :bigok:

Of course, then there's the HR-CR-HR combo in LesStrat

SD is the BEST!!!

I put the V-PAF in the bridge position of my swamp ash Les Paul and love it. The biggest surprise was when I put an Air Classic in the bridge position of my Wolfgang Special. Outstanding.

What type of tones is the V-Paf at home with?

I think they're rather versatile, but you have to like medium to low output pickups to appreciate them, these are not wound to 18k ;)

I think they're pretty much what PRS was trying to do with their McCarty: break ground between a strat and les paul. They sound like humbuckers with a bit of a sweeter tone. I'd say they're more articulate and have a bit of air to the notes. This could also be due to the fact that they're in a semi-hollowbody, but IIRC my Epi LP sounded very similar with them in it. The middle tone yields some great, almost acoustic quality clean tones. The neck is thick enough for jazz, but handles blues like a dream. The bridge really cuts for rock and roll and note separation is definitely apparent. I like how they deliver the humbucker tones, but have some definite single coil properties at the same time, it's very hard to describe.

I'm not a huge Dimarzio fan. I had a few that came stock on my Grosh and I couldn't find anything great about them. The Virtual Vintage singles were bland, boring and uninspiring. The PAF Classic was a good humbucker, but nothing that stood out for me and told me "this is the one". The Virtual PAFs just plain kick and due to Dimarzio's reputation, they'll never get the credit or praise they deserve.
