Hey, i'm looking for something to record with my computer for up to 300$, it should be either USB, Firewire, or a soundcard. Any suggestions?

Re: Best Recording Device For Under 300$?

Just be warned, I've had a heck of a time installing the drivers for it(Tascam US-122) under Windows XP. Two musician friends of mine got one, and the process failed miserably for both of them. Finally did get it working, though. If you get one, ask ratherdashing what he did.

What do I offer now that I've criticized? Nothing. :( I have a MOTU Ultralite, and it works effortlessly, but it goes for more like $500-$600.

you might be able to swing an M-box or M-box 2 if you aren't opposed to buying used. that'll get you going with protools software, decent mic pre's, and the ability to add more inputs later if you want to with the digital inputs.

Actually I am buying used so I need something that's about 300$ new cause I got about 150$ to spend used.
The Line 6 stuff isn't USB is it?

Hmm what I read is that it uses usb for power but connects to the soundcard.
The toneport is basically a soundcard itself. USB powers the toneport but you can also plug headphones into it (has a headphone jack). There are also outputs to run to monitors as well. I don't know if there's a way to ran the sound out to your computer speakers, haven't figured that out yet.

LINE6 Toneport!
HAs everything what a guitarist need!

Oooh yeah ... forgot about the Toneport.

Never had a problem running it on XP - I just installed the drivers and it worked.

From the Line 6 website Toneport section:
Outputs:
*Stereo Line Outputs via two 1/4 inch
*Headphone Out

Correct me if i'm wrong but that means that it output's to the soundcard which means the recording quality will be degraded by my soundcard.

What do you guys think of the M-Audio Audiophile USB?

No, it's a sound card unto itself, just like the US-122 I posted above. The outputs you listed are the audio outputs. It does digital I/O through the USB.

Re: Best Recording Device For Under 300$?

So which of the three will give me the best recording quality? Toneport, US-122 or the Audiophile USB?
Any other suggestions?

Re: Best Recording Device For Under 300$?

Another vote for the Toneport. Go for the KB37, it's got footswitch and expression pedal input (for wah, bender, etc.), plus it's a midi controller!

Re: Best Recording Device For Under 300$?

toneport is 32 bit 192khz.
and have a descent ASIO driver ,really low latency (i have no problem recording live) ,and real time hardware monitoring!
it "is" the soundcard itself ,and does it really well.UX2 2 or the new KB are the better ones.
GearBox (the line6 software with the tones ,metronome, tuner etc) is a great tool and rock solid.Updates are great too.
BTW ,Cubase sx3 ,abelton live 4 ,5 ,6 ,sony acid pro 6 do see it automaticly ,and u can use it as midi too.
Best buy for it's price.
