Best replacement speaker for a Fender Blues Junior?

I've got a bone stock Blues Junior, and it sounds decent, but I'd like to make it sound better. I've heard that replacing the speaker is a major improvement for the amp, so what do you all recommend? If it helps at all, I play everything that's not metal. :)

depending on what tone you're going for, some choices would be:
Jensen RI C12N or C12Q, or Weber versions
Celestion G12H30 or V30
Weber Bluedog

ceramic Weber Bluedog = biggest tone/$$$ improvement I ever made.

FWIW-I just dropped a Hellatone 30 into mine and also put a fresh set of JJ's in there. I'm very happy with the tonal improvement. Going the Hellatone route, vs. the Jensen/Weber as Curly mentioned, the Hellatone, although it's a nicely balanced speaker, gives a broader, deeper tone and less bottom end snap-it really opens up that little cabinet nicely. The G12H30/Hellatone 30 has a great big bass response, but it doesn't seem as crisp as the Jensen/derivatives-thereby leaning away from the classic fender sound. The Jensen/Weber route would keep you in the same Fender vein if you will.

Changing the speaker was a great improvement for mine and the tubes were a minor, but noticeable step up. I'd start w/ the speaker first-it cost me about 80 bucks, tubes were 55 from tubedepot.com

Also, Jeremy has used a greenback in his and many others have sung the praises of an Eminence Texas Heat-that'll run you a bit less and is a great speaker.

I just ordered the JJ tubes for my blues jr, and I have been trying to decide on another speaker as well, but I do play metal, mostly rythm, so deep lows are a must. Would you recommend the hellatone for that??? After reading the post on small amps through bog cab I feel really dumb for dumping my 4x12 loaded with v30's

I was recommended by Billm over at FenderForum.com to get the Cannibis Rex, as i want my Blues Jr. to sound more in the direction of a mini-Bassman LTD !

Great bottom-end response, with NO high trebble ear-piercing shreeks !

Does that make sence ?

i have a cannabis rex in my deluxe reverb, great speaker but i dont think it sounds much like a bassman which ive also owned. its thick and meaty but doesnt have the bite that a good bassman does. those old p10r's got some snarl to em.

a jensen style alnico speaker will get you more of that bassman tone but you might need to "modify" the amp a little to get it in there. if i was trying to get that type of tone id go for a weber 12A150 or 12A150O.

i use a g12m in mine like dave said and i love it but i run the jr basically flat out except for the preamp gain and bass. tube amps fatten up considerably and put out lots more bottom when they are run hard like that. the g12h is a good option for a british tone too, it has more bottom end than the g12m which some people really like especially if they are running the amp cleaner

I run my gain/vol at 8, but have the bass down at around 4 or so, with treb at 5 and mids at 6/7. The G12H does fill out nicely there.

No, not Vox-like. Slightly stronger, but much tighter bass than the stock POS. Maybe a move slightly toward a more Marshall-like tone.

Sorry, for me describing how different speakers sound in writing is as bad as trying to explain how a wine tastes...

Fresh Start, it is pretty hard to describe tone.... and then people start using words like "snappy" and "bite" and "mojo"... ???

I guess I want a more Fendery tone out of it, but with EL84s that won't entirely happen. Does anyone know the speaker they put in the NOS version? That's supposed to be a good speaker.

its a jensen p12r in the relic i believe, but its a 50w jensen ceramic in the nos, probably something like the c12n but with some cost cutting.

Several guys chime in saying they love it in a Blues Jr. Personally, I'm not sure that I'd want a "dark" speaker in that amp - especially with JJ power tubes - but it seems perfect for others.

You probably found this already, but here's the Blues Jr. Mafia thread from the Fender Discussion Page. Speakers, tubes, mods galore... it ain't a Blues Jr. anymore! ;)

I have also seen and heard this amp with an extension box out of the backside of it to extend the depth and tone of the amp. It tended to get rid of that boxy tone, while somehow adding a deeper, but not boxy sounding tone to it!

I used to have a Blues Jr, but sold it. Do you guys who've put V30's in them find that it's too much speaker, because it's rated at 60 watts, and the BJ is what...22w? Does this keep you from getting any speaker cone breakup, or is that not what you want from your speaker in BJ?

My personal thought would be that a lower rated speaker would be a better match.

the jr is only 15w and i didnt really like the v30 in it. kinda lacking bottom end, but loud

My friend has a V30 in his Claais 30, and it sounds very sweet !
Never tried one in my Blues Jr. though !

What about the GREENBACK's - they are the lowest rated speaker i know of !

The more i think about it, the more i like the idea of a Cannibis Rex in the BJR. and if i want to get a diff. tone, plug in the 1x12 extention cab fitted w. a Greenback :smokin:

KINDA LIKE ONE AMP BUT TWO DIFF. VOICE'INGS !!!
