Best shredding neck pickup that has tons of pick attack and aggression?

Re: Best shredding neck pickup that has tons of pick attack and aggression?

isnt the paf pro super bassy and way too smooth?

Re: Best shredding neck pickup that has tons of pick attack and aggression?

From what I've read here, the Full Shred neck is a very similar wind to the Jazz, but with a bit more focus and attack. I'd say it may work for you. Alternatively, how about the Liquifire? It's usually my go-to bridge pickup but it was designed for the neck to match with a Crunch Lab in the bridge.

Re: Best shredding neck pickup that has tons of pick attack and aggression?

The Paf Pro can be a little boomy in the bass in the wrong guitar (short scale mahogany) but I don't think of it as too smooth. The Air Norton is too smooth. I don't know what a Nailbomb bridge sounds like, so I don't know if the Demon would overpower it.

You were emphasizing pick attack to begin with which is why I suggested the Pro and the Demon. Now you seem to be more concerned with the neck being too boomy, in which case I would suggest the Jazz or Dimarzio Humbucker From Hell. The Humbucker From Hell might give you the best of both worlds. It isn't as bright as people make it sound.

Yea the black winter ive heard alot of, how does it compare to the jazz? Im assuming its maybe more aggressive than the jazz because of its higher output and ceramic magnet.

The Jazz is more open and makes you work harder. The Winter neck is a bit more compressed, but stays very well defined and articulate under high gain making shredding a breeze. Can't drive 55 with the Winters :).
I've got no experience with the Full Shred neck version (Jazz with hex poles as far as I know), but if it's anything like the bridge version, you'll certainly have one tight and articulate neck pickup.

Re: Best shredding neck pickup that has tons of pick attack and aggression?

Gravity storm neck... middle wind with a small ceramic. it has killer articulation and separation without being unforgiving. Its warmer than a PAF Pro, the highs are clearer and not as harsh.

There is also the Evo neck which is killer but unforgiving if your technique isnt wired tight it screams it out loud.

Though from the sounds of it, it sounds like its more a technique issue than anything else. A pickup will only carry you so far and you really want to learn to do pinch harmonics... learn to do them unplugged. If you can make the guitar squeal unplugged you can do it with any pickup.

Definitely. Using stiffer, sharper picks will help with articulation too.

doesnt it sound like "liquid" haha, cuz im looking for transparent sound with a good pick attack basically... i want to keep the neck pickup vibe with some of the bridge pickup style attack...

Re: Best shredding neck pickup that has tons of pick attack and aggression?

My guitar is a short scale mahogany guitar. Thats why i am worried, for example my nailbomb is little too dark so i will have to change the magnet... and its a pretty bright sounding pickup, just my guitar is dark...

Re: Best shredding neck pickup that has tons of pick attack and aggression?

Oh god... look i can pinch harmonic very well, i have been doing it for while, but everyone should know that it doesnt really come out as well on the neck than the bridge, i can pinch harmonic on acoustics and have been for a while...i can pinch on the neck pickup but it doesnt squeal like a bridge pickup...

Re: Best shredding neck pickup that has tons of pick attack and aggression?

I use stiff picks and can pinch harmonic easily... just it doesnt come out as nice on the neck pickup...

If you can pinch on an acoustic you can pinch with a nailbomb. In terms of harmonics there is nothing deficient about a nailbomb and infact they will do pinches better than some of the suggestions in this thread.

DMZ PAF Pro and the inexpensive pure-tone version from pure-tone.com called the black widow. If you're thinking what I'm thinking when it comes to neck pickup shredding tone, that's the one you want.

isnt the paf pro super bassy and way too smooth?
Not in my Dean. The Black Widows certainly aren't either.

If you really want bright, the Dimarzio Humbucker From Hell might do it for you.

Yea in the bridge... in the neck yes but it doesnt come out very strong... trust me the nailbomb isnt like other nailbombs... you gotta dig in to make pinches really squeal on the bridge, on the neck its tough and even when you hit the perfect pinch it doesnt quite come out all that strong... on my sentient neck and pegasus i could get much better pinches... especially the pegasus, that thing squealed all over the place, but compared to my nailbomb in tone the pegasus was rather bland and lame...

Yea i keep hearing about them? what are they advertised for? and i thought the jazz was generally the brightest pup out there?

Not at all.

It's not a thin-sounding single-coily pickup, but it's definitely more towards the clearer/brighter side of humbuckers, in my exeprience. It's less fat and has way more snappy attack than a Duncan '59 to my ears.

I recommend a PAF Pro too. Tons of pick attack with cool wah-like mids.

Re: Best shredding neck pickup that has tons of pick attack and aggression?

Isn't the Nailbomb like the BKP version of a JB? Wouldn't a Demon or a Full Shred be a good compliment to that?

As for the pinch harmonics not popping out on the neck pickup, yeah you can do it, but for some reason, pinches really squeal on the bridge. I don't know all the science behind it though.

Full Shred neck SH-10n ! Seriously...

How did we get all the way to post 5 before someone said this. And why are there any posts after this one….

Screamin' Demon as a distant 2nd to this.

Re: Best shredding neck pickup that has tons of pick attack and aggression?

No the nailbomb has a much more aggressive style to it, its more like a smoother duncan distortion, but with tighter bass than a jb and nowhere near as harsh mid spike... its very aggressive tho unlike the jb, you know its designed for metal, but its not very high output.
