Best Soldering Iron and Accessories for Guitar Work?

Re: Best Soldering Iron and Accessories for Guitar Work?

I'll contribute to bumping the zombie...
I got this Hakko kit from amazon with the alligator and mag glass which is indispensable. Used it for a number of pups, pots, caps, and switches projects. Works beautifully. The station is only 90$ or so seperately, but the full assortment of tips included in the kit is well worth the extra 30$!

I have a Hacko and use it all of my soldering jobs motor brakes, guitars etc. Love that unit.

I also have that mirror and clip device. My only complaint with it is that base should be a bit heavier as I have had to clamp it down a bit to much or it will tip, still use it though.

Hakko and Weller are pretty much what you want if you want something that will last and not also not overheat and fry your electronics. Im not home and cant recall what model i have but I have a Weller station and it has worked well or my guitars and making my own guitar cables. I did a quick google search and this is a pretty good guide if you a re looking for the best soldering iron for guitar repairs. I believe I actually have the heavy duty weller on that list.

By the way, highly recommend building your own cables if you get an iron. way cheaper than store bought and the soldering iron pretty much pays for itself if you go that route.

Re: Best Soldering Iron and Accessories for Guitar Work?

I had a family member give me their 60w Weller that is older than dirt and still works perfect from what my buddy tells me. I used a soldering iron a couple of times decades ago in school and I am just getting back in to it so I can solder my new pickups and start building some of those DIY effects pedals. So I went to Frye's and picked up another Weller that's adjustable from 5w - 40w and comes with the soldering station (Weller WLC100). I used it to help clean up the mess inside the controls inside my new guitar. The guitar is made overseas and looks like someone sneezed solder all over the place inside. It wasn't done by someone with any soldering experience lol. I learned how to use the de-soldering pump and braid stuff pretty good that day lol. I also picked up that helping hand station with the added bendable light attached. It seriously makes life a lot easier while soldering. 40w with a chisel tip seems to work fine for me so far. I would go with buying a Weller because you can find the tips practically everywhere that sells any soldering supplies. I made a rookie mistake and forgot to wet the sponge my first time using it which was pretty stupid of me but at least I didn't burn myself lol.
