I know this has been posted before but i cant find it. So what is your favorite solid state amp? And what is good about it?

Re: Best Solid State amp

Best one i've ever tried is the Marshall 5210. It's a two channel amp, but each channel can do a thousand tones.

There's a clip of me playing my uncle's in the tips & clips forum ;)

Re: Best Solid State amp

I use only new and old tube guitar amps myself, but I do like the Line 6 stuff. So does Seymour...that's what he's using. Lew

Re: Best Solid State amp

My Vox Valvetronix VTX 120 head just has been a great amp! It has 2 12AX7s in it's output stages, but I still feel like it's a ss amp...

The tone, versatility, and the effects are hard to beat for $600 also...And this is coming from a guy that swore he'd never use anything other than a tube amp!

Crate Powerblock

Just has me impressed. Light, great backup, and it's got a solid sound to it. good feel.

Re: Best Solid State amp

Say what you want - But I loved my Peavey Studio Pro. It had a solid clean sound, great distortions, and lots of features (bright, scoop, gain boost, fx loop, verb, footswitch channels, high low inputs) and it was rock solid reliable.

I don't think digital modellers should count for this. Technically they are solid state - but I don't think that's what he meant. I could get soundsa out of that amp that rivalled modelled sounds - or were better in some cases! It handeled effects well too!

Re: Best Solid State amp

My Randall RG100SC combo. I have yet to try another SS amp that has a better tone or feel. I'm sure there are some, but like I said I haven't found one. The Line6 stuff doesn't do it for me for some reason.

Re: Best Solid State amp

Love my behringer GX212 but they are discontinued. I agree with Aceman, the Peavey SS amps are an excellent value.

Roland JC 120 for spanking clean tone.

+1

the high end line 6 stuff aint bad either

and the fender cybertwin is great, but that has a tube i think, so it doesn't count

Re: Best Solid State amp

I bought a Carvin SX300c last year and love this amp. Very versitle with the 3 channels and the cleans are great. Some of the best cleans that I've heard from an amp.

Re: Best Solid State amp

I don't really think of modelling amps as being in the same category as traditional solid state amps. They're in a class by themselves, since they don't really use the same technology.

Re: Best Solid State amp

Hell i'll pretty much play any SS Amps in a pinch... at home i've owned lots of Fenders, a few Marshalls... I have used Peavey's-(never owned one but have used them) and they sound pretty good depending on the year/model and what music you are playing. But since 1988 or 89 my bedroom practice amps have been various models of the Fender Princton Chorus..... I have owned 3 of them over the years and in the mid 90's i also had an Ultra Chorus... The Ultra was cool as you could get some volume out of the sucker.. The Princton Chorus amp has cheap speakers that buzz and crap out with the bass notes when above 3 or 4 on the volume controll... The Ultra could at least get you thru a jam with a drummer..

What i like about the Princton Chorus amp is at ultra low volumes i can get hot rodded stereo stack sounds.... at a wisper..... many people say the Princton is too fuzzy... it is fuzzy but if you play around with the controlls you can get some neat low volume sustain and crunch! Cut the gain back to about 60%, mess with the EQ...

I hated the DSP models...... The older ones with the lush chorus are the better models if you ask me... If i can grab a used Ultra Chorus for cheap i will... their sparkle clean channel with the lush chorus sounds better to me then the JC-120 in ways.... I also like some of the early 90's Peavey 2x12 stereo amps for their Clean Chorus sounds..... The Peavey's also seem to be built better and have better speakers..... but the Fender's are cool...

Any Crate featuring their Flexwave Evolution 5 preamp.

Tube-like tone. Tube-like feel. Great custom speaker that is perfect for dialing in crisp, bold cleans or violent distortion.

Great easy to use features with many available cosmetics from vintage to ultra-modern. I like open back cabinet design as it sounds more open and pleasing to my ears.

TRULY an innovative amp line good for many guitarists with a need for versatility on the stage and in the studio.

Re: Best Solid State amp

Easy. The Line 6 Vetta I and II, the Valvetronix AD 60 and 120, Line 6 HD147, and Flextone HD XL. SS amps became obsolete the day those modelers came out.

Re: Best Solid State amp

The Randall stuff isn't half bad. One of the studio's I used to play at you had either a 2203 1/2 stack or a Randall to pick from. Granted the Marshall needed a re-tube or re-bias and some major TLC.:13: The Randall blew it outta the water?? (flame suit on):laugh2: I had a Marshall Vavlestate 8080.
The cleans where awful and sterile.:eek13: But in the OD1 channel I was able to coax some righteous Classic rock tones. Besides the Line 6 stuff, the Tech 21 amps are worth looking into if ya wanna go S.S.:smack:

Re: Best Solid State amp

Ampeg made something similar to the JC-120 that's supposed to be great.

i am very happy with it too.
i abuse it for bass also, which works much better than i expected :-)

for guitar applications i ran it through a 112 cab with a GB12 speaker.
the clean tone was very warm and tube like ;)
